- Does anyone know if the 2022 CD reissue is the same mastering from the Demon Music release several years ago where the bonus material was sourced from vinyl and sound like crap?
referencing High Priority (LP, Album) TBU 26699
waiting for the LP’s Japan esse pressing ressued for concerned ..- Awesome original pressing from 1985 with shrink wrap and hype sticker in mint condition. Vinyl is mint and very quiet. Replaced paper inner with a poly lined inner sleeve. Great production by Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis on Cherrelle’s second album on Tabu/CBS. She’s in great form vocally and everything works. Big hit ‘Saturday Love’ with Alexander O’Neal is a highlight, but there’s much more!
- Edited 3 years agoAs some of you know, this remaster is sonically ok, but there are some issues.
For those expecting the 12" version of "You look good to me", forget it. It wasn't even on the original LP.
ALSO, The indexing on the cd is sloppily done...The track markers are actually in the wrong place in a couple of cases.
For example, the dialog that opens "Saturday Love" is somehow attached to the previous track, "Oh no it's you again". - Wasted money on Demon's re-release of High Priority because I wanted the long version of "You Look Good To Me" on CD (as it has never been on CD before) only to find out that they transferred it from vinyl and did a really terrible job in doing so. They could have at least poured isopropyl rubbing alcohol over the record to clean it for the transfer. Then, found out that Japan licensed it from Demon and pressed their own version and being the masterminds of perfection that Japan is when it comes issuing CDs from other countries, found it to be from a master tape. Sounds a LOT better. Thanks, Japan.
- Edited 10 years agoIt's important to note that while this release from Demon Music Group as part of their Tabu reissue series is marketed as remastered, many of the bonus remixes and extended versions are taken from vinyl masters. Demon recently addressed this in May, 2013, by committing to identifying tracks which are taken from vinyl, for future releases in this series. Each release in this series comes with extensive newly written liner notes, but many audiophiles have expressed disappointment with Demon's use of vinyl masters, particularly when some of the vinyl-source bonus tracks they've included have been available on other compact disc releases or compilations, but from a master tape source. As of June, 2013, Demon has not released a statement explaining why they did not take advantage of this and use previous digital releases but instead chose to use vinyl for their release of some tracks. Additionally, their vinyl sources have been graded as rather poor quality, with minimal efforts to reduce transfer noise such as turntable hum. Of some of the bonus tracks, "You Look Good To Me" has never seen a CD release of the extended/remix versions, and these are taken from vinyl. "Artificial Heart (Dance Remix)" is also from vinyl, but is available on the "Icon" Cherrelle compilation using a master tape source. "Saturday Love (extended and instrumental versions)" is also take from vinyl, but the extended version is available on the "Club Epic Volume One" CD compilation, using a master source.
- Edited 19 years agoCLASSIC Jam & Lewis - this was a foreshadowing of a lot of their later, more well known work with Janet, Michael, Heavy D., New Edition, Human League, etc. (to name a few)... but ironically would be a foreshadowing of their next album with Cherrelle, Affair. On this go around, aside from knocking off three big R&B hits, they set the stage for the content of the next album by brining in long-time friend Alexander O'Neal to duet with Cherrelle on "Saturday Love"... and to pepper his presence all throughout the album with cameo spoken word vignettes... all to develop a rumoured affair between O'Neal and Cherrelle. Jam & Lewis did the same on O'Neal's "Hearsay" album, out shortly after this LP and they featured Cherrelle in a duet on O'Neal's album ("Never Knew Love Like This")... in this process they ended up taking two singers, coupling them together on distinct and separate releases, and fueling a rumoured romance which reached its peak when Cherrelle's next album "Affair" was released... How did it resolve itself? Did the two finally become an 'above the table' pair? Or were they forced to keep their love secret from everyone else?
Shlocky marketing gimmick? Hell yes, but with the suave O'Neal and elegant counterpart Cherrelle playing their parts to a "T" it didn't come off as tacky or trite - it worked and sold enough of Cherrelle's "Affair" album to reach platinum.... and to 'retroactively' boost sales of this album, "High Priority" and the "Saturday Love" single both to gold status.
