FC Schalke 04 sign defender Leo Greiml

The Royal Blues have made their first signing for the 2022/23 season! Leo Greiml will join FC Schalke 04 from Rapid Vienna on a free transfer, regardless of which division S04 are in. The 20-year-old centre-back has put pen to paper on a contract running until the end of the 2024/25 season.

“Leo is a real talent and one of the best Austrian players in his age group,” praised sporting director Rouven Schröder. “Leo has taken responsibility on the pitch for both Rapid and Austria U21s in the past before his knee injury halted his progress. His personality will fit really well into our squad. We’re really pleased that he’s decided to join us in the summer, regardless of which league we’re in,” added Schröder.

Greiml, who is currently in the final stages of his rehabilitation training after an ACL injury, said: “I’m working really hard to get back to full fitness as soon as I can. I can’t wait to get my chance to impress at Schalke from the summer onwards. I’m really thankful for the trust placed in me by the Schalke bosses and I believe that this is the right place for me to continue my development.”

Before joining Rapid Vienna, Leo Greiml played for AKA St. Pölten’s youth sides and also featured regularly for Austria’s youth teams. He got his chance in Rapid’s first team after impressing with their reserves. This season, Greiml played 20 times in all competitions, including in Champions League qualifiers and Europa League games.
