Beulah Land, a television mini-series, was filmed in Natchez, and debuted on October 7, 1980. Often referred to as a TV version of “Gone With The Wind,” this sweeping epic concerns the lives of two Georgia families from the antebellum days through the Civil War - the Kendricks, who resided on the Beulah Land plantation, and the Davises, who owned the Oaks plantation. Both families loved, prospered and lost during this period, and were both touched by the events of the Civil War. Melrose, now owned by the National Park Service, served as the main house of Beulah Land plantation. The cast included many well-known actors such as Lesly Anne Warren, Hope Lange, Eddie Albert and Meredith Baxter-Birney, as well as newcomers Jonathan Frakes, Madeline Stowe and Don Johnson. Slated to air in May of 1980, the debut of the mini-series was postponed, however, when NBC received vigorous protests from the NAACP and a group of African-Americans critics who objected to the stereotypical portrayal of some characters in the series. Additionally, these groups argued that some of the dialogue implied that slaves did not want freedom. Despite receiving mixed reviews, Beulah Land received a primetime emmy nomination for costume design.
