Product Description

When is life not worth living anymore? a marvelous cast led by Joseph Fiennes explores that question when Paul Thompson (Fiennes of Shakespeare in Love and Elizabeth) talks old buddy Jeff (Justin Kirk of Weeds) into helping him fulfill a crazy childhood dream of swimming the entire 150 mile length of the Hudson River. Joined by Liz, a teacher intrigued by their scheme (Elizabeth Reaser of the Twilight Saga and Emmy- nominated for TV's Grey's Anatomy), they plunge into the adventure with glee. But Paul and Liz soon realize Paul is driven by more than just the stunt when they find out Paul's "deadline" to finish is also the anniversary of his wife's unexpected death. Is swimming against the current a struggle against sadness or the last act of a man who is ready to give in to grief? Mary Tyler Moore (multiple Emmy winner and Oscar nominee for Ordinary People) and Michelle Trachtenberg (TV's Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Mysterious Skin) round out the cast of this thoroughly original and conversation-starting drama.

Top reviews from the United States

THIS DVD is 1 hour 37 minutes and I'm writing the review even though I've just passed the 41st minute
What I like is the plot - simple enough: guy wants to swim the 300+ mile Hudson river, for no apparent reason
But there is one

It's not so much an action show, so I can have the amazon window on and just listen to the dialogue, which is good - funny, real

I don't know how the show will end and if it ends up with 1 star

My husband wanted this and found it and loves it. Great movie.
Was a bit funny some DVD's out there where not made to run on American DVD's but finally we found a wonderful Buyer who had the right one.
Runs perfect and is very enjoyable movie.

(I don't think I've given a 1-star review in perhaps ten years.)

I so desperately wanted to see this movie. I spent the happiest years of my life running a research fishing boat up and down the Hudson River, and I was really looking forward to seeing those old hunting grounds again.

There were even enticing early shots of the landscape I loved: a mile-long train chugging its way along the base of the Palisades; a Moran tug with a bone in its teeth... I turned it off twenty five minutes in, with a sad sigh, but then I turned it back on, to write this review, so you OWE ME, big-time.

There are three main characters, and perhaps one of them makes sense, but I doubt it. And then later there's the horror of Mary Tyler Moore showing up, a stunningly-good actress (see
Ordinary People ) who hopefully made her casting decision because she needed a new refrigerator that day.

And then Michelle Trachtenberg shows up, quickly getting the confused hero on his own and frantically instructing him to taste her, no doubt as an appetizer.

Two more things. The swimming is utterly fake: for camera recognition, Fiennes swims with his entire upper torso out of the water at all times, which is only possible in movieland.

And why is the film called "Against the Current"? He swims the entire movie WITH the current.

You can tell I'm just reacting, not actually describing the movie, but if you want to watch it, please do so, then come back here and leave a comment telling me my assessment is wrong, OK?

I'm just not the kind of person who likes sad, depressing movies. The whole time I was hoping something good was going to happen but it never did.

It's never easy to show depression on film. Because depression is personal and unique to each person, to play a person suffering from long term depression is quite a challenging task. Joseph Fiennes does a remarkeable job of portraying a man so overcome with depression over the unexpected loss of his wife and child that five years later he still struggles to find meaning in life without them. His only goal in life five years after their deaths is to swim the entire length of the Hudson river - which he had told his wife he would do someday. He plans to kill himself after he accomplishes this. Against The Current will make you think about what it means to be depressed, what it means to love, and how loss can devestate a life well beyond society's normal acceptance of a grieving period. How long is too long to grieve? Against the Current does a great job of sparking the debate. Definitely worthwhile film for those who love think about the questions raised long after a film has ended.

A downplayed, but outstanding portrayal of a quiet young man's calm determination to end his life. Thought provoking story line and acting. Beautiful photography. The final scene is very moving.

This movie covers a man still dealing with his grief from losing his family. After 5 years he decides to swim the lower Hudson. That being said, this movie has the most amazing and gorgeous shot of Hudson and the different views you can see it from. The friendship of Fiennes and Kirk is a strong point for this movie. It moves the story along and helps keep the pace of this wonderful indie flick. Highly recommend.

I bought this based on other favourable reviews and they didn't lead me astray.

Poignant and engaging drama, with good performances.
