Jazz Pitcairn part of writing team earning NAACP Image Award

‘A Black Lady Sketch Show’, a US television production of which Jazz Pitcairn is a writer, has recently won an NAACP Image Award.

This latest accolade comes on the heels of Pitcairn, 25, being nominated for several awards for her short film ‘Ivan’, which was loosely based on her family’s experiences during the 2004 hurricane.

The annual National Association for the Advancement of Colored People Image Awards celebrates the outstanding achievements and performances across more than 40 competitive categories including music, film, television and streaming, music, literature, and podcasts.

Pitcairn, at 23, was the youngest person to write for the half-hour sketch comedy starring Robin Thede, which took the 2024 Image Award for outstanding variety show (series or special). She was initially hired as an assistant, but was promoted to staff writer for season four. She wrote six episodes.

“I’m so excited to see ‘A Black Lady Sketch Show’ be recognised by the NAACP!” Pitcairn told the Compass.

“It’s an incredible honour and one that I’m so proud to share with the entire team.”

She added, “This show means so much to me as it was my first opportunity to write for television and really kickstarted my career in the film/television space.”

Pitcairn studied film and television at New York University, graduating in 2021. The news of the latest award was shared on the university’s alumni newsletter.

‘Ivan’ premiered in 2023 and won best score for an international film, at the 2024 Garden State Film Festival for ‘Force of Nature’, composed by Fadi Khoury and performed by Khoury and Pierce Constanti.

It was also nominated in 2023 for best short film and best environmental short film. In addition, it had previously been nominated for a 2023 Hollywood Music in Media Award for best score in a short film (live action).

Pitcairn is working on developing a full-length feature film for ‘Ivan’ for which she is involved in two different fellowships, The NYU Production Lab and the 4th Annual Woodstock Filmmakers Residency and Incubator.
