Happy to report that political satire is alive and well

I may not know that much about British politics, but know enough about Ian McEwan that I wanted to read this novella of political satire, confident that any gaps in my knowledge of the subject matter being skewered would be well compensated by the story itself. I was not disappointed. The political satire is indeed alive and well.

An obvious take on Brexit, McEwan reverses Gregor Samsa’s predicament in Kafka’s Metamorphis and turns a lowly, little cockroach into the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom. For what end is revealed quickly enough, at least in political terms. For what underlying end is revealed only at the end, after the mission has been met with success, and it is humorous and delicious.

Throughout the book, the political situation at hand is utterly ridiulous, and McEwan deserves special praise for conjuring up such an asinine yet totally realistic situation. Well, realistic in that it involves aspects of our ordinary lives anyway, making it simple for the readers to understand the concept even if we shake our heads that anyone would be foolish enough to pursue this particular course of action.

As McEwan is excellent at doing, the descriptions are so crisp, the world described so alive, that it projects the reader into the world of the novella itself. That is what I love about his prose so much, the feeling that I am right there with the characters, totally immersed in the drama. This one is a winner.

Cheeky and fun. The best part of this book comes in the beginning when a cockroach finds that he has become the Prime Minister. It turns out the Prime Minister was already a bit of a cockroach. Such great fun.
