But the new team is great too. Different, sure, but the family dynamic is something new and fun. The worldbuilding and new elements added to the universe offer some enticing potential future stories. The sets, effects and music show a deep love and honor the originals, but this film continually offers something fresh.
I was worried that it would be too serious from the trailers, but I laughed throughout. This one really felt like a perfect sequel to the original. I really hope we see more from the Ghostbusters (and the Spenglers) in the future!
The story – yawn - The Spengler family (girl power again) returns to the iconic New York City firehouse where the original Ghostbusters (who are underused) have discovered they are out of room storing their captured ghosts. When the discovery of an ancient artifact unleashes an evil frozen force, Ghostbusters new and old must unite to protect their home, New York and save the world from a second ice age. (Zzzzzz).
Paul Rudd and Carrie Coon are great additions to the cast, if slightly more than two-dimensional in this film (much better in the last), but this movie is girl-centric at the end. Mckenna Grace as Pheobe seems to be all the focus of the film as the Spengler kid with all the answers and Logan Kim was absolutely pointless. Kumail Nanjiani as the family line of the fire defenders for centuries was proven extremely useless and there for really dumb comic relief. Only Patton Oswalt gives a wonderful exposition of the real heart of the story and poof, he is gone. Oh there seem to be a lesbian ghost interest played by Anna Baryshnikov and it seemed a little out of place as a story point.
Dario Marianelli’s musical score gives nods to Elmer Berstein’s original fun classic romp of the original and even Ray Parker Jr.’s original Ghostbusters song makes an audio appearance at the end. The effects are ‘cool’, frozen. Even Slimer’s couple of appearances were okay but predictably uninteresting. So much money, so little story and absolutely ‘dead’ in the area of comedy and fun. Pass on this one.

This was a pretty interesting and suspenseful movie that I’m sure no one will be frozen while watching since you’ll be covered in sweat and shaking from both fear and laughter.
It’s unfortunate that it’s run time was 5 minutes shy of the preferred 120 minute run time but since it’s the 5th movie in the series I wonder if that’s a slight nod to the buffs of what could have been ??
I’d like to give it 5 bags but the lack of Rick Moranis after lots of rumblings in Hollywood that this would be his return to the movies knocks it back to three bags but the return of slimer after several movies without him was for the bust heads everywhere and as much as I loved the previous entry Ghostbusters 4, it was nice to see the original Busters take a much more prominent role in this entry since they’re really what we want to see.
Paul Rudd is great in antman and he is here too but a ghostbusters movie wouldn’t be the same without the original four and with Frozen Empire we get what we’ve been asking for!
So I’m gonna give it 5 bags of popcorn and toss in a little proton pack and Ecto Cooler to drink on the way to the next bust!
“Frozen Empire” is a worthy sequel to “Afterlife” and is a step forward in telling the Spengler family story. There are a few nods to the heritage of Ghostbusters, but this is a new story that doesn’t overly rely on fan service and pushes the narrative forward, all while building on the shoulders of its history. The film expertly captures the tone of Ghostbusters, and it’s easy to tell how reverent the filmmakers are with this franchise. Gil Kenan’s and Jason Reitman’s (the original director’s son) are the best hands we could have hoped to have this franchise in.
This movie (and its predecessors dating back to 1984) are no “Citizen Kane”, but that doesn’t mean they aren’t stories worth telling. At its heart, this is a film about a family, for families, and such a great addition to the Ghostbusters lore. If the stories hold up to this quality of storytelling and filmmaking, I can’t wait for more.
