New York Times Bestseller

When distinguished criminal lawyer Venetia Aldridge defends a young man for the brutal murder of his mother, she views the case as simply another opportunity to demonstrate her brilliance in the courtroom. But within weeks of the trial Aldridge is found dead at her desk, a bloodstained barrister’s wig on her head. And as Commander Adam Dalgliesh of Scotland Yard attempts to make sense of events, the murders continue, inexorably spiraling into fresh complexities of horror.

Why is it rare these days to encounter a mystery that hasn't been obviously dumbed down for a general readership? Perhaps the British market is more demanding and, yes, I obviously need to read more of Ms. James--yet I can't help but be impressed by an author that has command of her subject sufficient to write a conclusion that is all too familiar to anyone who has practiced law. To say more risks a spoiler warning but suffice it to say that the law does not have as good a track record as that of most literary detectives.

The exposition of the life of a barrister was particularly interesting to me--an attorney toiling away in the overworked American interpretation of a dispute-resolution method over a thousand years old. Frankly, I wonder how many of my colleagues could reasonably discuss Magna Carta (but I'll bet that they can discuss OJ) One need not worry about the specific terms of art--an English Type-A personality is very similar to the American Type-A personality so far as obsessive focus on professional requirements is concerned.

Not only are the characters fully and expertly developed, not only does the author have much to say about the spirit and purpose of the criminal defense, there is an intricate story of revenge that says much about the meaning of justice. What is more just? Self-help? Letting the system have its way?

The ending of this book, apparently unsatisfactory to many, is in reality a great achievement--it is the perfect resolution. No spoilers here, the title says it all. Here's the highest recommendation I can give, I have ordered the first Adam Dalgliesh mystery--Cover Her Face--and look forward to some excellent reading as I work through each and every one of these mysteries.

I enjoyed this book. I has well developed characters, complex twists, and lots of details. It can get slow at times because of the details but it kept me engaged nonetheless. Like any investigation dogged police work will usually solve the crime following the twists and turns that can lead to a surprise ending. I will read a few more by this author.

I can't remember if I first read James because it was assigned in a detective fiction class I took or if I saw a movie/tv version of one of her books on PBS. It has been a few years since I read my first of her books. In any case, her characters--detectives, victims, suspects, killers--are so wonderfully developed and believable. She is so descriptive that I really felt like I had a movie going in my head the whole time. This is the second of her novels I've read (although number ten in her Adam Dalgliesh series). If you love good murder mysteries, you won't go wrong with P. D. James.

Living in England in the 80's, I happened on a tele drama series, "Cover Her Face", with the soulful, bright and intuitive Inspector Adam Dalgliesh and I had to find not only that book but every book P.D. James wrote and has written since. This book as all her mysteries does not disappoint. She was a true mystery lover's author. So if you are looking for rich characters, flawless descriptive narrations and the surprising twist and turns that all good detective novels should engage read the book and you too will be wanting more and judging other writers of the detective mysteries by this standard.

I’m thinking this was a pretty much your average and nondescript run of the mill murder mystery here. It’s titled A Certain Justice, but I’m finding it ironic since there is little justice when it comes to the ending of the book, how it’s handled, etc.

I think this book was fairly uneven in various ways. We are given this big set up and much exposition that leads to the eventual murder of a high profile lawyer (Venetia Aldridge) early in the novel and the subsequent motives for various people who would be considered suspects or at least persons of interest in this crime. However, then it all sort of is left by the wayside in the second half when things take a different turn.

I had a hard time getting invested in this book, could only read a few pages a day, and something about either the author’s style or the way she presented characters or situations were underwhelming at points. There’s the fact that there seems to be so many diversions that stall the plot. Also, this book is dominated by characters who are unlikeable, mediocre or pedestrian at best (including her central characters), or at worst have too many skeletons in their closet or are weak, broken in some way. Anyhow, to me they all fell sort of flat.

Then, we have all this build up to the ending and it’s sort of handled in a clunky, anticlimactic way. You figure after all the investigation and work, and everything, it would be better handled, or we could have been given a slightly more coherent conclusion to this murder mystery.

Not to say there aren’t some moments of intrigue about certain characters and situations, and clearly the author knows her stuff when it comes to this genre, but there were just too many inconsistencies for my liking so I ended up feeling pretty “meh” about everything with reading this book.

Anyhow, this is my first read from this author and many say it’s her best, so not sure I’ll continue on with the Dalgliesh series.

I wish P. D. James would have given us as much character development of Dalgleish as is devoted to Kate Miskin and the various suspects.

Zunächst wie ein Roman mit der Lebensgeschichte einer sehr interessanten Protagonistin beginnend, entsteht ein klassischer spannungsgeladener Krimi. Unerwartet schon das erste Mordopfer. Mehr will ich nicht verraten.
