Top ways to experience St. James's Park
The area
Address
Neighborhood: Westminster
If you only had an afternoon to experience London on a grand scale, Westminster would be a wise place to start. The ornate Houses of Parliament and Westminster Abbey sit adjacent at a corner of Parliament Square, and a short stroll along The Mall leads to Buckingham Palace. Trafalgar Square and Nelson's Column are just up the road as well. As captivating as the architecture is, the wonders of Mother Nature are highlights of the area too. St James's Park (arguably London's loveliest), the expansive Green Park, and pedestrian friendly tree lined paths along the river showcase the exquisite manicure provided by English gardeners. Just beyond the landmarks and the gorgeous outdoor spaces, quiet residential squares and age old local pubs offer a more subdued take on this global seat of power in the heart of London.

- pfefmeisterSan Francisco, California4,115 contributionsNice Walk after the PalaceAfter visiting Buckingham Palace, we walked through the park on the way to the Churchill War Rooms. Though crowded, it is well maintained, with a nice cafe about halfway through the park. There’s a lot of ducks and geese, so much poo everywhere. Definitely a pleasant stroll thru a lovely park, and a rewarding thoroughfare to other sites.Visited June 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten June 18, 2023

We were on the way to see Buckingham Palace and our tour guide took us through this park. Very nice and we were able to see a guard on horseback as well as beautiful views. Very tranquil.Visited May 2023Written June 19, 2023
- WWW-Wanderlust1,203 contributionsOur favorite London parkWithout doubt our favorite London park, close to Buckingham and within a short reach from Westminster Abbey and the Royal Horse Guards to name a few. This park is divided by a lovely pond and there is plenty of opportunity to sit on one of the many park benches. There is also a restaurant where you can enjoy a drink. Great park to escape the hustle and buste of a busy city.Visited May 2023Written June 22, 2023

Our timing was perfect since it was feeding time so we could watch them catch their dinner. Simply fabulous.Visited June 2023Written July 1, 2023
- NICHOLAS TDubai, United Arab Emirates8,955 contributionsExcellent parkThis park is between Buckingham Palace and Whitehall and also offers views of the London Eye. Parliament Square is also only a short walk away. There is a large lake in the centre - lots of bird life, including swans, geese and pelicans - and other wildlife. A very well located park. Free to enter and a great place to catch your breath of exploring the central London sights.Visited July 2023Traveled soloWritten July 9, 2023

- Tore MMandal, Norway225 contributionsPerfect for a walk to stress downQuiet and nice walk around the small lake. A lot of birds, squirrels around. Fed by humans even if signs tell not to. But feeding birds attracts rats and they were there running in open at daytime. But a nice park between Buckingham and Horse GuardsVisited July 2023Traveled with familyWritten July 23, 2023

Lovely lake to walk around, with an amazing range of waterbirds - we saw pelicans and Hawaian geese. Easy to access from St James's Park tube station. Free entry, but rather crowded on Saturday.Visited August 2023Traveled with familyWritten August 12, 2023

St James park is a lovely park any time of year to walk through or to sit and relax and take in the scenery. Close to Buck Palace and a short walk to Big Ben and other attractions. While in the park make sure you stop and feed the squirrels! Loving curious little things also the Indian ring neck parrots will come visit too! While in the park of ab early morning you can listen to the band warming up and later in the morning you can see the changing of the guards from just outside the park on the Mall. If you need to pee make sure you have 20p! St James cafe is a great place to warm up or cool down and the foods pretty good too. Relax on a bench or go for a stroll and look at the glorious flowers and gardens...

This is a lovely park for a picnic or to spend a few spare hours if you have a layover in London. 10 minute walk from Victoria Station or 5 Mins from St James Park or Green Park Tube.
Some of London's main tourist sites are located a ten minute walk from the park - Buckingham Palace, Trafalgar Sq, Houses of Parliament/Big Ben Tower, Horseguards, Changing of the Guard.
Selfie spot - the Blue Bridge ove the lake for Buckingham Palace and the spires of the Palace of Westminster
Great children's playground with cafe and toilets. Attendants rigourously enforce strict no adults unless accompanied by child policy.

Yes, it was cold and it was definitely trying to rain but the first daffodils were flowering and the sun was valiantly trying to break through and lift the gloom. As I walked towards Buckingham Palace, the sun shone through and the daffodils' brilliant colour suffused the whole area. It was beautiful! As a kid I used to come here often and take the time to wander around or see how quickly I could do the circuit of the lake. It seemed that every time I went there it was different. Today was no different and the park is wonderful - no matter what the weather.

Essentially the front garden to Buckingham Palace, SJP links the palace to the official entrance at Horse Guards which is guarded by the Household Cavalry Mounted Regiment 24/365. Immaculately maintained with flowers and exotic plants and trees that perform throughout the year there’s also the added attraction of spectacular wildfowl and incredibly tame squirrels. Pelicans have lived on the lake since they were gifted to King Charles II by the Russian Tzar, but there are also storks, rare ducks, and emerald flashes of parakeets on Birdcage Walk. The cafe sells high quality lunch and snacks and there are numerous kiosks throughout the park for tasty treats. The Japanese Bridge offers the finest views. Horse Guards Parade is actually part of the park. Head there to see the daily changing of the Queen’s Life Guard and rehearsals of the Queen’s Birthday Parade throughout May and early June.

We discovered the park on our stroll back from visiting the nearby Palace and, even though we were in the middle of a (warm) winter, we could imagine just how gorgeous this place would be in spring and summer, in particular.
Birds and squirrels were in relative abundance, the latter delighting us tourists by their antics.
There's a sense of tranquility in the park, a feeling of being able to relax and unwind, while casually admiring the plants and lakes.
A really nice spot in a very busy city.

St Jame’s Park surrounded by Buckingham Palace, Clarence House and Whitehall are a great destination for a long walk and for me stalking the cute little squirrels with my camera. (Apparently Londoners hate them but as an Australian where we don’t have them I was hooked). There are also some strange looking pale pink pelican strutting their stuff around the duck pond area. Quite photogenic chaps. I was there in Winter but can only imagine how beautiful it must be in Spring.

This is a lovely park in an historic setting. At one end is Trafalgar Square. At the other is Buckingham Palace. There is a picturesque lake running through it; and an exceptional range of bird life. It’s by no means huge; and, especially at weekends, it can get rather crowded. But it’s well worth a visit, as a memorable site in its own right and because of its proximity to other famous London sites demanding a visit.

A beautiful park with the centre piece of the lake. There plenty of space to stop and chill out for a while. The mature trees and the wild areas are great for wild life. The waters birds had a lot of young just waiting to be photographed. The squirrels are always around as well. The pelicans on the lake are adorable, amazing to be in the centre of London. The cafe on the side of the lake has reasonable coffee and cakes, it serves hot meals too. It's a great connection between the Palace and House Guards.

I had a wonderful time at the St James Park yesterday. The view of the lake was breathtaking, especially when the sun was setting and the water was shimmering like a million diamonds. I saw some ducks and swans swimming peacefully, and a couple of squirrels running around the trees. I also met a friendly old man who told me some interesting stories about the history of the park. He said he used to come here with his wife when they were young and in love. It was a very relaxing and enjoyable experience, and I would definitely recommend it to anyone who needs a break from the city life.

Had a walk through St James’s Park the first weekend in March and I was surprised how clean it was. From what I remember from staying in London in the mid 80s it was a grubby, noisy, smelly place. Not anymore! Maybe the congestion charge made the difference but we sat having a coffee at the Buckingham Palace end and could actually hear the birds, ducks swans etc. Very little traffic noise and a world of difference from 35 years ago.

Where is the best spot for a picnic, that would be easy for people to find? I would like to organise a family and friends picnic in the park, in the summer for my daughter who will be graduating from uni .

Does anyone know where in the park to go to rent a deck chair? The chair rental website doesn’t say specifically, so I’m curious if someone could give me an idea...

Just grab an available chair and the collectors will soon arrive - sometimes they are not around so that would be some spare cash to spend on a charity
