Birdee Pruitt has been humiliated on live television by her best friend, Connie, who's been sleeping with Birdee's husband, Bill. Birdee tries starting over with her daughter, Bernice, by returning to her small Texas hometown, but she's faced with petty old acquaintances who are thrilled to see Birdee unhappy -- except for her friend Justin. As he helps Birdee get back on her feet, love begins to blossom.

hadn't seen this in 10+ years, i forgot how painfully sad it sometimes is, how even the corniest melodramatic moments have such darkness underneath...i'm still slightly uncomfortable with it's vague "snap out of it" view of depression, but i feel like everyone's happy-ish ending is well earned, and it's more about the multi-generational mother/daughter relationships than the heartbreak and romance, and how women react to their relationships with men instead of the men themselves. the ending is tidy on the surface but still unsure, only leaving the possibility for happiness open, and i love that it's willing to be messier than other rom-coms. maybe because i love spending time in smithville but the dreamy soap-opera haze and soft colors and small town quirkiness and the little touches of magical realism are so comforting to me...it's so dorky but i feel like it really captures a lot of the barely explainable instinctual reasons why i love texas.

Hope Floats has definitely got heart, but it can feel a little manufactured on the whole; something never quite convinces with the script in particular, coming close to being genuinely moving at times yet always stopping short in hokier territory before it gets there, a contrived quality underneath that never quite rings true.

What would it be like to go back to the small town you grew up in? I certainly wasn't a prom queen; I can't imagine anyone who hasn't already found me on social media even remembers who I was. Certainly none of them have any idea who I am. I try not to think much about my hometown; I hated living there and was happy to leave. But the Southern small town atmosphere of films like this, when they get little pieces of it right, give me unclear memories, the feelings of memories, that linger. Small town Alabama was not Texas, though; no one wore cowboy hats.

What a waste of peak Sandra Bullock. This has a promising opening scene: a naive housewife (Bullock) is ambushed on a 1990s daytime talk show and learns that her husband and best friend are having an affair. But then the movie becomes a meandering, dull mess. Basically, Bullock takes her young daughter back to her small hometown in Texas, where she hangs out with her mom (Gena Rowlands), sees people she used to know, gets a job in a photo store, and helps her daughter adjust at school.
