Ever since finding this two-CD set (there's a single-CD version with the same title and cover-art), I've been completely taken with it. The first disc, except for the absence of "Stop Your Sobbing" (and maybe "Dandy"), is well-nigh perfect as an overview of hits and notable tracks. But it's the second CD where the box of delights that is this set really opens up -- the selection of mostly Ray Davies solo releases is hauntingly beautiful at times ("Afternoon Tea" and "Scattered" are practically worth the price of admission by themselves), never more so than on the remix of "Voices in The Dark" from RETURN TO WATERLOO. The latter song was already one of Davies' finest creations from his third decade in music, but the remix makes the track even better -- maybe his finest production this side of "Waterloo Sunset" (which appears twice on this collection, but who's complaining?). This is one collection that is worth finding and keeping, and listening to often. Very often.

This two CD compilation features one CD containing all/ most of the well-known PYE singles from 1964-70; and most have already proven to be timeless classics. Strange, though, that the great "Shangrila" from "Arthur" has not been included! Most Kinks fans obviously have these tracks already as most have been several times before ( "You Still Want Me" maybe the only exception ) .

CD 2, is called "Waterloo Sunset" after Ray Davies collection of short stories. I have not yet read the book, but I assume that the songs compiled for this collection have references to these stories.

It's a funny/intersting mixed bag of old, new, classic and rare. For Kinks collectors there is plenty to go for here. First of all there are 3 previously songs recorded in 1997 - demos recorded with members of the Kinks. Moreover there are two fine alternate versions of songs from Ray Davies' soundtrack "Return to Waterloo". When this CD was first released the soundtrack had not yet been CD released!!

There is a great live recording of "Rock'n Roll Fantasy", a nevr heard before alternate recording of "Art Lover" with slightly different lyrics!

Among the previously released material, "Mr Pleasant" and "Drivin" would have fitted better onto the first CD, but they're great songs and it's interesting to hear the outstanding "Celluloid Heroes" alongside Pye material. Another often forgotten gem is "Holiday Romance" from "Soap Opera"; I would love to CD a Donald Duck or Micky Mouse cartoon covering this song - lot of humour hidden there.

Two of the strongest tracks from the last full-length studio album "Phobia" are also included. So the CD covers most record companies tke Kinks recorded for!

あまり知られていないが、このCD２枚組みはThe Kinksファンなら是非GETしてほしい！それくらい価値のあるものなのだ！CDの一枚目はあえて採り上げる必要も無い名曲群で初心者には入門用として一応お勧め。でも初心者用なら２枚組みの"ULTIMATE COLLECTION"がある。このアルバムの価値はボーナスCDになっているCD−２の方だ！といっても、ちゃんとしたタイトルがあるようにRay Daviesが書いた短編小説ようの曲もある模様。英語がよく分からないので自身は無いが…ということで、今回はCD-2のレア・テイクについてコメントをしよう。ちなみに私は記念に２セット持っている。CD2-3,-4,-6,-8,-10,-13,-15は既発のCDで聞けるものと同じバージョン。したがって、レア・テイクはそれ以外の曲であり、実に８曲も聴けるなんて何という幸せだ！CD2-1は強いて言えば"PHOBIA"の頃に近いかなあ。でも少しジャジーで気だるかったりするが…CD2-2のライブはこのCDでしか聴けない。CD2-5は原曲よりも洗練されたアレンジになっている。CD2-7は個人的には原曲の素朴なアレンジの方が好きかなあ…CD2-9はデモ録音にリミックスしているためデモという感じは無い。むしろ洗練されていて、これは好きだなあ！CD2-１１は未発表だったのが勿体無いくらいの良い作品だ！何というか、聞いているだけで心が落ち着いてきそうな心地よいリズムの曲。CD2-１２はThe Eaglesの”New Kid In Town“とARISTA時代の名曲”Misfits”を合わせたような、少しカントリーぽい感じが、これも心地良い！CD2-１４はThe Kinksを代表する英国讃歌だが、名曲を二度楽しめるなんてもう”I am in paradise”だ。とにかく、この２枚組みに駄作は無いぞ！

This excellent combo contains two compilation packages: 'The Singles Collection' by The Kinks, which you can buy separately, and 'Waterloo Sunset', a treasure trove of lesser known by the band's lead singer/songwriter Ray Davis, indeed, five of these fifteen tracks were previously unreleased.

In terms of a compilation album by this highly influential group (who can count The Beatles, The Rolling Stones and The Who among their contemporises),'The Singles Collection' is a definitive collection of their most fruitful period. All of their well-known singles on PYE label from 1964-1970 are here, including the beautiful 'Waterloo Road', and other stone-cold classics like 'You Really Got Me', 'Days', 'Sunny Afternoon', 'Lola', and 'Tired of Waiting For You'. All of these gems are presented chronologically.

'Waterloo Sunset' is the exclusive bonus disc, based on stories by Ray Davis, and an interesting bag of rarities and oddities, some of which are from his less-celebrated solo career. My favourite song has always been the excellent 'Celluloid Heroes', which pays tribute to several famous film stars of the 20th century. The aforementioned five unreleased tracks are a demo recording of his song 'The Shirt', a demo of 'The Million-Pound-Semi-Detached', 'My Diary', 'Return to Waterloo', and a live recording of 'Rock and Roll Fantasy'.

This is a real collector's package, and a permanent reminder of the genius Ray Davis had with his pen, cementing his reputation of one of the greatest songwriters of his generation. The nicely presented booklet with filled with small pictures of the band, memorabilia, a commentary on all of The Kinks' songs by Peter Doggart , and even a message by Ray himself, commenting on the contents of the second disc.
