Also known as "Those Dirty Dogs", this spry Spaghetti Western benefits from the engaging pairing of Gianni Garko and Stephen Boyd. By the time of this release, the zenith of the Italian western was already a distant image in the rearview mirror. There were few (if any) significant late-cycle efforts that matched the high points of what came before, and most of the product had turned to more comedic, "Trinity" inspired fare. That's partly true of this outing as…
Charge! (1973) doesn't know whether it wants to mimic the early, ferociously violent days of spaghetti westerns, or throw in with the newer, sillier humor of the era during which it was made — and so it tries to do both. Not surprisingly, the results are somewhat mixed.
An unexpectedly shaggy dog-ish film, Charge! is about both the quest of three cavalrymen to either recover or destroy an arms shipment stolen by a fairly bonkers Mexican general (who, in a twist, isn't trying to overthrow the Mexican government — he just wants Texas back), and a bounty hunter's dogged pursuit of one of the general's men: Angelo Sanchez (Simón Andreu), whose is worth $1000, dead or alive. The threads of…
Spagvember 2023 - Film 10 / 30
Uneven but not unentertaining late stage spaghetti western. This is another with a "men on a mission" type story although the tone is majority farcical. Majority, as the film also still has the action and tense close ups of any serious entry, yet still also tries to find time for a Trinity-esque brawl, albeit one that's better than others I suppose.
Stephen Boyd, Harry Baird, and Howard Ross are honing in the "Stewart Granger" style of acting, just smiling and waving the whole way through, while Gianni Garko is at laconic professionalism. I don't even know what the hell Alfredo Mayo is doing however. Kinda goofy madman thing, I find it sorta funny…
'Those Dirty Dogs' aka 'Charge!' stars Gianni Garko as a Muslim bounty hunter. Though the film is violent and has a high body count, it's also more on the funny side. An entertaining flick with some cool ideas and a good score, but not quite as good as some of Garko's others.
Watched on Amazon Prime.
This was pretty rough, but I gotta say having the lead character named Koran/Quran is a bold and unique choice. He even quotes it a few times. This is listed as a comedy, but the only funny bits are the terrible terrible sound effect choices. A wailing soundtrack could have bumped this up for me, but it was just okay.
Spaghetti western highlighted by a Koran quoting, exploding-shell-rifle toting, odd bounty hunter played by Gianni Garko. The film is a little uneven but certainly watchable and entertaining especially for a late-cycle entry.
Second on a double bill -- this movie was called THOSE DIRTY DOGS -- in which a muslim bounty hunter they call Koran (played by Gianni Garko) just wants to catch a mexican bandit and return him for 1000 dollars. But on his tail are three tough army guys on a mission to take down a crazy as hell general who stole a bunch of weapons.
Hijinks occur. There are several long meaningless fist fights that are fun to watch, but by the third or fourth, one tires of.
Another late in the spaghetti western movie -- it resides in that total action and complete comedy realm. Thanks to QT for showing these. A good time.
A forgettable spaghetti western with a twist as it features a muslim bounty hunter.
Lumbering spaghetti western with Quran reading bounty hunter Gianni Garko escorting Civil War Capt. Stephen Boyd on shooty capers in bandit land. Garko uses explosive ammo in a cool rifle/umbrella ... and there's a daft brawl. Oh dear. Keep watch for Helga Line.
I knew from the first 10 minutes I would give this 4 stars. A bromance slapstick comedy western? A Quran reading parasol toting gunman? Knocking people out with a boomerang? Stephen Boyd in cavalry uniform? Singing the theme song? We have been blessed
