Kayleigh Miller is the second protagonist of the 2004 science fiction thriller The Butterfly Effect, she's the daughter of George Miller and Tommy's sister and Evan Treborn's best friend and later girlfriend, she and her brother are sexually abused by their father, causing them a bad life.

She is portrayed by Amy Smart.

Role in film[]

Kayleigh is first seen when Evan's mother takes him to George's house, she gets excited and tells Evan that her father is producing a movie, George asks Evan to participate and he accepts. in the basement Kayleigh gets scared when taking off her clothes, Evan asks her what's going on while Tommy, her brother watchs them psychopathic look.

A couple of years later Kayleigh is 13, she, Evan, Tommy and Lenny, a friend of all of them are in the basement smoking cigarette when Tommy finds a dynamite and they go out to test her. Evan puts the dynamite in a woman's mailbox, he covers Kayleigh's ears to protect her from the noise, the dynamite explodes affecting Lenny who goes to a hospital.

Kayleigh, Tommy and Evan go to the theater to watch the movie Se7en, Kayleigh doesn't like the movie and leaves, Evan goes after her and the console saying she deserves a better brother, they kiss and Tommy catches them, he'll beat Evan when he gets knocked down by a boy who's buying popcorn, Tommy beats the kid and gets kicked out by security,  he smiles sadistically at Evan and Kayleigh.

Lenny out of the hospital, Evan and Kayleigh will visit him, they take him for a walk through the woods, they see Tommy tying Evan's dog in a bag, they try to convince Tommy to let him go but fail, Kayleigh is punched and faints, Tommy spanks Evan and Lenny. When they wake up, Evan sees his charred dog. Evan and his mother move to another city and Evan writes a note to Kayleigh promising to be back one day.

9 years after, Evan as an adult discovers that Kayleigh is working as a waitress at a pancake diner, he finds her when she's going home and begins to ask questions about the day in the basement, which makes Kayleigh angry she charges Evan the fact that he never took her away with him. Evan reveals that George is a pedophile causing Kayleigh to commit suicide. Feeling guilty, Evan comes back the day he and Kayleigh were in the basement, George is threatened by Evan who says he should love his daughter more and discipline more Tommy than she, Kayleigh tells his father never to touch her again.

In college, Evan and Kayleigh are the most popular and hot couple on campus and belong to a fraternity, they are happy. Evan wakes up bleeding and goes to the bathroom, he plans to surprise Kayleigh, his friends help him, he arranges a romantic dinner and plans to propose to her, the two have happy dinners when one of Evan's friends shows up and tells him that Evan's car has been broken down. they see Tommy who has come out of prison and wants to get revenge on Evan, he insults Evan by saying he's with his sister and refers to Kayleigh as "hottie", Evan beats Tommy with a baseball bat and is arrested.

In the prison Evan returns to the day when his dog is burned, Before they get to the place where Tommy is about to burn his dog, Evan finds a sharp object to free the dog from the bag in which he is locked. Evan tells Lenny to cut the rope. When Tommy's about to set the bag on fire, Evan says he can change. Tommy drops the torch, but Lenny stabs him in the back with the sharp object Evan gave him, Kayleigh wakes up and screams at the time of seeing his dead brother. In the new reality, Kayleigh is a drug addicted prostitute who lives in poverty she has a scar on her face, Kayleigh doesn't believe in Evan and he details things about her that only a boyfriend can know, she challenges him that if he wants his life to be better, stop Lenny from killing his brother, or rather avoid the deaths caused by the explosion.

Evan again reads his diary and is transported to the moment when the dynamite is about to explode, because all problems caused in that day are started at that time. in the new alternate reality, Kayleigh is Lenny's girlfriend and he is Evan's roommate in college. Evan is amputated due to the dynamite explosion, he walks with Kayleigh around campus and asks her what it would be like if they had stayed together, she reveals to Evan that she only chose to live with her dad to get closer to Evan.

Evan travels back again to the day he and Kayleigh were in the basement to make the film, Evan finds the dynamite cartridge and lights up to threaten George, who hits him in the hand and knocks down the dynamite, however Kayleigh picks her up, the cartridge explodes and she dies.

On the run away from the psychiatric hospital, Evan finds a homemade video of Lenny's 5th birthday party, he goes back in time and makes no friends with Kayleigh, instead he threatens to kill her and her family if she gets near him, Kayleigh cries scared and runs to hug her mother, Kayleigh and Tommy choose to live with their mother, they have normal and happy lives without anything traumatic happening in their lives..

6 years later, Evan has a law firm in New York, he's walking down the street talking on the phone and sees Kayleigh, the two look at each other and keep walking.

Alternate ending[]

At the end of the director's cut, instead of Evan returning the day he met Kayleigh, he returns on the day of his birth and commits suicide inside his mother's womb, he strangles himself with the umbilical cord, thus erasing all his influence he had on everyone's life especially Kayleigh and Tommy. The montage sequence showcasing their lives is the same in the theatrical ending except they all play in full, with Kayleigh applauding Tommy in her graduation speech, the film ends with Kayleigh marrying a man and being happy.
