Pads or period underwear

Discussion

A little backstory, I’m 22 and started my period at about 8 years old so you’d think I’d know a lot, but I’ve been on birth control since I was like 12 until now. The first period was okay but now it’s heavy out of control. It’s not as bad lying down but that’s where my question comes. (I’ve tried tampons and absolutely hated it)

Are pads or period underwear better? At night I hate wearing pads because they’re so uncomfortable and I’m scared of leaving them on too long throughout the night and so I’ve become what they call a “free bleeder” when I’m laying down. It hasn’t stained my sheets just my underwear and I’m able to wash it out in the morning but I’m worried this isn’t a proper way to do it. I definitely think I should wear pads but I also heard about period underwear recently. Does anyone use it and does it work well for them?

If you're free bleeding and not having a heavy flow then period underwear would work. I found them best on lighter days or wearing them with a tampon/menstrual cup as they don't hold a massive amount of blood.

There's no proper way to have a period, but if you don't want to stain your normal underwear I'd say try them. But if the way you're doing it at the moment feels comfortable then don't change it because you think you should.

In my experience, pads are better cause tampons are utterly uncomfortable for me. Period underwear is a very good and more sustainable option too. If you are on a heavy flow, some panties come with reusable/washable cloth pads that you can insert in a slit that is stitched into the underwear.

Regardless of pads or period underwear, I sleep with a towel under me in case I bleed.
