High School - Kodaikanal International School

High School

We have a holistic philosophy of education that is evident from our curriculum. Our students achieve laurels in a wide variety of arenas, from academics to music, art to cultural, social service and environmental commitment.

At KIS students consistently achieve higher results than world mean scores in the IB Diploma and SAT exams. Every single KIS student who applies to universities or colleges worldwide gains entry. Every student graduates with a KIS High School Diploma plus an optional IB Diploma and / or IB certification. Our students participate in a variety of global experiences such as Model United Nations and multi-disciplinary exchanges, conferences, and competitions, both in India and internationally.

International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP)

KIS the IB Diploma Programme is optional and fully integrated into the KIS High School Diploma that is accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools.

IB encourages interdisciplinary learning, guiding students towards perceiving and responding to the interlinking fabric that weaves subjects together rather than seeing them as separate, watertight arenas. Being the oldest IB school in the country, we have truly emulated that model in our teaching and learning style.

A unique feature of our IB programme is that we offer a wide range of subjects under the IBDP. The IBDP programme aims to develop students who have excellent breadth and depth of knowledge – students who flourish physically, intellectually, emotionally and ethically. This rigorous program involves studying a minimum of six subjects, three at higher level (HL) and three at standard level (SL). Examination papers are set by the International Baccalaureate organization and are also marked externally. Students must also:

  • Complete at least 100 hours of instruction in an interdisciplinary course called Theory of Knowledge (TOK)

  • Complete an extended essay of 3000-4000 words involving independent research in an IB subject

  • Participate in an approved 150 hour program of creativity, activity and community service (CAS)

KIS High School Diploma

KIS High School comprises grades 9-12. As an American high school, all students graduate from KIS with an internationally recognized High School Diploma. Students in grades 9-10 follow the Middle Years Program, with grade 11-12 students either enrolled in the IBDP or KIS Diploma. This essentially means that at KIS the IB Diploma Program runs alongside the KIS Diploma Program.

The KIS Diploma is accredited by the Middle States Association of Schools and Colleges, Philadelphia and is recognized by the Association of Indian Universities, New Delhi, as equivalent to the Indian “+2” secondary certification. Requirements for receiving the KIS Diploma are defined in terms of credits, which apply to subjects in grades 9 to 12. Apart from the core academic subjects, students are expected to complete courses in Religious Education, Health, Fine and Practical Arts, Computer Education and Community Service to be eligible for the US accredited KIS Diploma. For their core subjects both KIS Diploma and IBDP students study the same courses. All graduating grade 12 students receive the KIS Diploma.
