Biography

Virginia Eriksdotter (1 January 1559, Kalmar Castle - 1633)[1], was a Swedish noble. She was the daughter of King Erik XIV of Sweden. Virginia Eriksdotter was the issue of King Erik and one of his mistresses; Agda Persdotter. She was known for her beauty.[2]

Origins

Prince Erik had several mistresses and Agda was one of them. Her origin is unclear but she might be the daughter of the rich district court judge Peder Klemetsson who moved to Stockholm from Sweden. The first time Agda is mentioned is when Erik lived in Kalmar from 1558 and onwards for a time, and it might be possible that he brought Agda with him from Stockholm.[3] Virginia was born January 1, 1559, at Kalmar Castle.[4]

Early Life

The relationship between Erik and Agda ended in the fall of 1561. Gustav I Vasa had died in June the previous year and Erik was now king of Sweden. Agda married the nobleman Joakim Fleming and Erik did not see it fit for his children to go with their mother and her new husband. All his natural children were accepted as his and were brought to the Royal Court in Stockholm to be raced by Erik's sister Cecilia. Agda's husband died in 1563 and for a short time she once again became Erik's mistress.[5] Cecilia got married in June 1564 and in the fall of that year she left Sweden with her husband for Europe, so Erik's sister Elisabet was put in charge of the upbringing of his children instead.[6] When he met and became interested in the young Karin Månsdotter he arranged for her to work at his sister's court and help raise Virginia. Karin soon became his favorite mistress and in 1567 they married. Erik had moments of delusion and his brothers overthrew him in 1568. He spent the rest of his life in captivity and died in 1577.[7]

Family

In 1566, when Virginia was only seven years old, Erik planned to marry Virginia off with the tsarevich of Russia Ivan Ivanovich but she declined. Instead she married Håkan Knutsson Hand, the stadtholder at Kronoborg Castle, around 1586. Together they had seven children who reach adulthood.[8]

  • Catharina, married to the Governor of Älvsborg Johan Henriksson Rytter
  • Knut, not married, murdered in 1614 at Rugils, Russia
  • Sofia, married to lieutenant-colonel Baltsar von Neüman
  • Arvid, not married, died 1621
  • Erik, not married, died 1632 at Ingolstadt, Colonel
  • Johan, dead before 1656, district judge, married to Agneta Gyllenmärs
  • Elisabet (1598-1651), married to lieutenant-colonel Per Joensson Gyllensvärd

The family lived at Björkenäs in the parish of Odensjö in Småland.[9]
