Summary

  • Unfrosted may have landed at the top of Netflix rankings, but its viewership figures tell a different story.

  • MovieWeb's Greg Archer finds Unfrosted to be somewhat middling, suggesting audiences approach it with the right mindset.

Unfrosted, the long-gestating dream project of Jerry Seinfeld, has debuted with one of the worst opening weekends for any Netflix original movie this year. The numbers for Unfrosted are now in, and while the comedy landed at the top of the Netflix rankings since premiering earlier this month, the viewership figures tell a different story.

Over its first three days, Unfrosted was viewed for 11.3 million hours globally. While that sounds pretty high, in context, Unfrosted looks less and less like a success story. Other Netflix original films to debut this year include Lift starring Kevin Hart, which achieved 58.5 million hours over its opening weekend, the eerie sci-fi Spaceman starring Adam Sandler, which garnered 16 million hours, and Mea Culpa from director Tyler Perry, which scored 32 million hours.

The likes of Code 8: Part II (33.4 million), Irish Wish (30.6 million), and Players (28.5 million) further paint a poor picture for Unfrosted, which is now the streaming giant’s least-watched original movie so far this year.

Unfrosted has been met with a divided reaction from critics, and now sits at a “Rotten” rating of 40% on the review aggregator site Rotten Tomatoes (alongside a rating of 54% from audiences). “Much like a preservative-packed toaster pastry, Unfrosted is sweet and colorful, yet it's ultimately an empty experience that may leave the consumer feeling pangs of regret,” the critics consensus reads.

MovieWeb’s own Greg Archer found Unfrosted to be somewhat middling, advising audiences to go into the comedy with the right frame of mind.

“Unfrosted isn't designed to dive into the psychological underbelly of its characters. We’re meant to relish them and gobble up every last bit of insanity. Know that, and you’ll love Unfrosted.”

Seinfeld star Jerry Seinfeld directs, co-writes, and stars in Unfrosted, with the rest of the cast including Melissa McCarthy (Bridesmaids, Can You Ever Forgive Me?), Jim Gaffigan (Jim Gaffigan: Comedy Monster), Amy Schumer (Amy Schumer: The Leather Special), Hugh Grant (Four Weddings and a Funeral), Max Greenfield (New Girl), Christian Slater (Heathers), Bill Burr (Old Dads), Daniel Levy (Good Grief), James Marsden (Enchanted), Jack McBrayer (30 Rock), Thomas Lennon (A Futile and Stupid Gesture), Bobby Moynihan (Saturday Night Live), Adrian Martinez (The Guilty), Sarah Cooper (Sarah Cooper: Everything’s Fine), and Fred Armisen (Portlandia).
