Born in Juniper Hill, Oxfordshire, Flora Thompson left school at 14 to work in the local post office. She married young, and wrote mass-market fiction to help support her increasing family. In her 60s she published the semi-autobiographical trilogy combined as LARK RISE TO CANDLEFORD (1945).

I have loved Flora Thompson's 'Lark Rise to Candleford' since I read it for the first time in 2004. I was in a bookstore in London seeking something to read while in hospital, knowing as I was 245 miles from home and wouldn't have many visitors. Flora's description of Lark Rise, the inhabitants, their way of life, and what life was like in rural England at the turn of the 19th century came alive from page 1 . To discover 18 years later that there were more books in Flora's 'oeuvre ' was a wonderful surprise of great cheer during the current pandemic. This book and three others popped up in Kindle recommendations and made a cold winter's day warm as I read of 'Charity Finch' and her family. She had what Ronald Blythe called a keen eye that a village born person had for anything out of the ordinary in 19th village life,and as life for the average villager then meant you didn't travel far, you knew your neighbours that much better. I am now about to read Heatherley for the first time and have just read the introduction by Anne Mallinson, and discovered that nearly all Flora's papers are at the University of Texas - although British i am an honorary citizen of Texas! I wonder what Flora would have thought about one of her readers having a slight inter-continental link. I've read the Lark Rise trilogy several times and still love every minute of it. For me Still Glides the Water is equal to Lark Rise and gets top rating from me.

I have wanted this book for a long time, ever since I bought an original copy of Larkrise.The descriptive passages of the countryside and the day to day living of the villagers,transports you back in time to a way of life that sadly has almost disappeared.
The reader will feel that they are actually there to experience the joys and the sorrows with the inhabitants of Restharrow and delight in the nature and peace of the countryside. A magical book.

I absolutely loved the "Lark Rise to Candleford" series and read them twice over from cover to cover whilst ill in bed with pneumonia, in September 2012. (I had bought the trilogy years before but somehow hadn't got into it at that time.) I thought the books were very well written and had great value as social history documents. When I discovered that Flora Thomspon had also written "Still Glides the Stream" I bought it and really looked forward to it. However when I read it, I'm afraid I got the impression that she was still trying to mine the same seam, but without the flair of the original writing. The first books had been so well-received that one can't blame her, but "Still Glides the Strream" just didn't light my fire.

This is a warm oatmeal cookie and hot chocolate type of book. It's the type you want to read on a Winter day snuggled up on the sofa in front of the fire and go back to a time when people had a simpler life and a slower pace. It's a book that makes you smile because of the simple humor of the people and their appreciation of the world around them. The author took the time to breathe, just breathe in the smell of the grain in the fields, the flowers; feel the sun on her face, the freedom of a quiet walk on a dirt road and smile at the neighbors around her. There was little formal religion but, she saw Him in the life around her. The poor chances of improving their lot in life, kept the parents concerned about securing a "situation" for their children, when they were old enough to work, The lot in life of the elderly, who couldn't work any more, was very sad, but the village did their best to share what little they had to make life better for these folk. On the whole, this book offered a look at a time when people faced adversity as a part of all their lives. They shielded their hearts against the pain as best they could, accepted it and rejoiced all the more when the times were good. I loved the book, in short.

Lovers of Lark Rise to Candleford will also enjoy this book. More on the daily lives of country folk before 1900, lovingly retold. There is more character development in this book than in Lark Rise. And less description of the hardships of daily life. This book is more nostalgic, written at the end of the author's life. Her rich descriptions of the countryside around Oxford transport the reader to another place and time.
