By 1974, the Alice Cooper group had risen to the upper echelon of rock stardom... and then, parted ways. In October 2015, over 40 years later, record store owner and superfan Chris Penn convinced the original line-up to reunite for a very special performance at his record store Good Records in Dallas, Texas. Alice Cooper (vocals), Michael Bruce (guitar), Dennis Dunaway (bass) and Neal Smith (drums) were joined on stage by Alice’s current guitarist Ryan Roxie (standing in for the late Glen Buxton). A packed audience, believing they had come to Good Records for Dennis Dunaway’s ‘Snakes! Guillotines! Electric Chairs!’ book signing, were surprised to bear witness to a full-blown happening. The historic reunion show including all-time classics such as “No More Mr. Nice Guy”, “I’m Eighteen” and “School’s Out” is now becoming available for the very first time worldwide. Luckily the event was documented. “Live From The Astroturf, Alice Cooper” (edited and directed by Steven Gaddis) toured the world to the acclaim of music fans and rock journalists alike. The documentary won multiple awards for its coverage of the historic event. This is boatloads of fun. The live CD sounds great through my truck's stereo speakers. Lots of fun, energy and tight musically. The video is an added bonus - I bought a BlueRay player just to watch the video.During my first video viewing, it became more and more evident that some of the instruments and vocals were re-recorded and then synched to the video.... but who cares? The video is such fun - looks and sounds great. I'm 68 years old and Alice Cooper played a major role in my youth. So glad nostalgic sets like this are still around and adding value to my senior years.

One-off gig recorded live on October 6, 2015 at Good Records in Dallas, Texas. From what was initially supposed to be a Dennis Dunaway book-signing event - it turned out to be a reunion of the original members. Supposedly, then Alice happens to show up as guest. Well, I liked this version (of how) this concert came to be. Guitarist Michael Bruce starts off with providing the lead vocals to "Caught In A Dream", then Alice joins in for an ass-kicking (right-on) cue of the timeless "Be My Lover", "I'm Eighteen", "Is It My Body", "No More Mr. Nice Guy", the rocking "Under My Wheels", then a couple of the ACG's classic anthems [if you would] "School's Out" and "Elected". Tagged on as a bonus track is an instrumental version of his Jim Morrison tribute "Desperado". Duration - 38:55. DVD is awesome - really enjoyed the Q&A session with Dunaway, Bruce and drummer Neil Smith. Comes with an irreplaceable full color 20-page CD booklet. Housed in a stunning three-fold digi-pack. Other recent releases you should also acquire - 'Killer - Expanded And Remastered' 2-CD, 'School's Out - Expanded And Remastered' 2-CD, 'Road' CD / DVD and Hollywood Vampires - 'Live In Rio' CD / Blu-Ray. Definitely has to be one of -the best- live / compilation titles I've heard in the past couple of years now. Highly recommended.

Excellent recording from the original band minus Glen Buxton. I would have given it 5 stars but not many songs on cd. Of all the live recordings of Alice Cooper, no one sounds like the original members performing these songs. My suggestion would be for the original band to tour with Alice and add 8 or 9 songs and release a full live album, it would be his best selling cd in years.

It's hard to believe it has been more than 40 years since this band played as a group and the music they make is as stunning today and it was back in the day. I first discovered Alice Cooper during the "Pretties For You" era and have been following Alice and the various iterations the bands formed by Michael Bruce and Neal Smith.

What a treat. I'm amazed at how this came together, how well the performance came off and to have a permanent record of the event. Amazing.

Ursprünglich war geplant, dass Dennis Dunaway, Original-Bassist der Alice Cooper Group, im Oktober 2015 im Plattenladen Good Records in Dallas, Texas, zu Gast sein sollte, um dort sein neues Buch zu signieren. Dazu kam es zwar auch, doch was zuerst nicht geplant gewesen ist: Die vier verbliebenen Mitglieder der Alice Cooper Group - neben Dunaway sind das Gitarrist Michael Bruce, Drummer Neal Smith und natürlich Leadsänger Vincent Furnier alias Alice Cooper - fanden sich alle bei Good Records ein, um dort ein kleines Gratiskonzert zu spielen. Für den Besitzer des Plattenladens ging damit ein Traum in Erfüllung. Verstärkt wurde die Band durch Ryan Roxie an der Gitarre, der den 1997 verstorbenen Glen Buxton ersetzte.

Dieses Konzert in dem kleinen Laden vor nur ein paar Dutzend Leuten ist auf "Live from the Astroturf" festgehalten. Die Setlist umfasst logischerweise nur Songs aus den frühen 1970ern, also aus der Zeit der Alice Cooper Group, bevor aus Alice Cooper eine Solo-Nummer wurde. Es gibt lediglich acht Tracks plus das während des Soundchecks aufgenommene Instrumental "Desperado". Einige der Nummern hatte die Band ewig nicht gespielt, auf der anderen Seite stehen die unkaputtbaren Rock-Evergreens "I'm Eighteen", "No More Mr. Nice Guy" und selbstverständlich "School's Out" - und beim Opener "Caught in a Dream" steht Michael Bruce am Mikro, bevor Alice Cooper die Bühne betritt.

Bei "Live from the Astroturf" bekommt man das Konzert bei Good Records im aufwendig gemachten Doppelpack sowohl als reines Audioformat auf CD als auch als Film in eine unterhaltsame kleine Doku eingebettet auf Blu-ray. Auf Letzterer befindet sich zusätzlich eine gut dreiviertelstündige FAQ-Session mit Michael Bruce, Dennis Dunaway und Neal Smith. Das Konzert hat eine großartige Klangqualität, glasklar und druckvoll. Die Band ist gut eingespielt und zwischen den Songs zu Scherzen aufgelegt, Alice Cooper ist bestens bei Stimme, die lauschige Atmosphäre wurde zudem gut eingefangen. Ich bin jedenfalls hellauf begeistert von "Live from the Astroturf" - und das, obwohl ich eigentlich gar kein großer Alice-Cooper-Fan bin. Darum ist die Überraschung umso positiver.
