Rock & Roll ...And the Beat Goes On Taschenbuch – 1. April 2011
Kaufoptionen und Plus-Produkte
The artists presented here played vital roles in the earth-shattering changes that unfolded over the decades, from the time rock started to roll in the 50s. Elvis swiveled his hips to the screams of teens—and the horror of their parents. Then came the attack of the Union Jack, with the madness of Beatlemania quickly followed by The Dave Clark Five, The Rolling Stones, The Who, and countless others. Petula Clark and Dusty Springfield belted it out with newly emerging girl power. Teens across America went "Surfing USA" to the sounds of The Beach Boys, while Detroit Soul had kids dancing in the streets. Hippies flew high on Jefferson Airplane—and Woodstock galvanized a nation. Records like Sergeant Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band and Pet Sounds changed the way music was produced forever.
Cousin Brucie puts the music in its historical context. The songs unfold against a backdrop of social upheaval, from JFK, Martin Luther King, Jr., civil rights, and anti-war movements to the first Earth Day, Batman, Women’s Lib, and Watergate. The book teems with archival photographs, posters, album covers, record labels, newspaper articles, magazine covers, poems, quotes, and more.

His latest book is a brilliant compendium of the roots of rock, 50s, 60s, into the 70s. Large, colorful photographs, many of them rare and unpublished, make you want to look for the next page. Multigenerational rock in Music, TV, and Radio are fully represented. Political heroes, cars, and stars fill the pages, with Morrow's anecdotes and insights into musicians he knows as friends--a fast read. Accented by Morrow's trademark humor and commentary along the path, there's even a `rock and roll' dictionary to explain to the Gen X'ers why things are copacetic if you don't have enough bread and have to put the kibosh on cruising the drag cause the music's too loud and the night's out of sight.
TV shows such as The Avengers, James Bond movies, and album covers by the 12-year-old genius, Stevie Wonder fill the pages. There's emphasis on Beatlemania, but Brucie properly includes all of the British invasion. Famous 60s/70s Hollywood couples are discussed; fun cars are pictured. Anecdotes and memories fill the pages with "remember when".
Co-author Maloof's contributions are masterful, yet invisible, keeping the convertible cruiser, with Brucie at the wheel flying `straight' on down the boulevard. Groovy, baby, now let's park this wagon, grab the boards, and hang ten, because after all, surf's up! And bring that radio along with you `cause cousin Brucie is on the air (Sirius/XM satellite).
Cousin Brucie's 250 Most Influential Artists feature covers a wide range: Carole King , Seals & Crofts, Otis Redding, James Taylor, Janis Joplin, The Buckinghams, Spiral Starecase, Jackie Wilson, The Moody Blues, Kool & the Gang, Brenda Lee, Steely Dan, Tower of Power, Frank Zappa, and, of course, Sonny & Cher. "Drums keep pounding rhythm to the brain...la di da di dee, la di da di diee...and the beat goes on, yeah the beat goes on, on, on".
This review appeared previously in "Keep Rockin'" Magazine, September, 2010.
I like the fact that the book just didn't talk about the music. Anyone can give a history of the music. This showed the impact of the music in the culture, and also, how culture was impacting the music. It was a history lesson in combined reflection. Full cover photographs included, with forwards by a bunch of people my dad knew.
Fire and Rain" Still, it is entertaining with lots of pictures of the pioneers in the gendre in their hey-day. If you are not, nor ever were in the business, it's a fine retrospective by someone who was part of it. I would like to have seen some more depth, and more additions from the "Cassette Rock" era.
