The seventh show of the Acoustic Nightmare Tour, this show in Lisbon is... basically the best show he had played in this tour up to that point. I don't really know what it was about that particular evening, but you can absolutely tell that Ryan was having an especially great time on stage. The setlist is again packed with songs that Ryan usually performs well, but he just outperforms himself tenfold on here. From the opening notes of Don't Fail Me Now to the last moments of I Love You there is so much emotion, so much raw talent and display of gentle melodies it is hard not to get invested. Especially his surprise cover of a classic The Cowboy Junkies song, this version of Strawberry Wine and Invisible Riverside are true highlights that show that this man basically needs nothing but a guitar and a microphone to put a spell on you. Truly gorgeous, and it's hard for me to imagine he somehow topped this set. This is truly the one Live After Deaf release you should check out.

Probably the finest of this extremely fine collection of live recordings. This one hits me extra hard due to having a deep emotional connection and nostalgia bell for at least three tracks here ("Invisible Riverside", "Strawberry Wine" and especially "I Love You But I Don't Know What To Say"- the latter was the first dance song at my wedding). The Cowboy Junkies cover is a fantastic deep cut surprise. Really the only classic Ryan breaks out is "If I Am a Stranger" and it gets an all-time great quiet reading.

Between this and Kozelek's "I Love Portugal", I'm convinced there's something truly special about that place. I should visit someday.
