The Minecraft Movie Is Finally Coming Together After Its Extensive Delay

Black Is Also A Great Casting For Steve.

Lacking a backstory, the role opens up endless opportunities for Black, who has experience playing video game characters.

Minecraft originally went into production in 2014. Earlier versions of the script followed a teenage girl and her friends as they tried to save their world from an ender dragon. It isn’t clear as to how much of that original script remains since it was rewritten by Chris Bowman and Hubbel Palmer. Filming was delayed due to the SAG/AFTRA strike, but recent updates suggest that the strike did not prevent the film’s principal photography from being completed. Furthermore, it’s still expected to be released in 2025.

In the game’s expansive lore, the ender dragon is a flying hostile mob boss that guards access to multiple key points. It attacks players by charging them or using its unique dragon acid attacks.

Black is part of the talented Minecraft cast. So far, Jason Momoa, Danielle Brooks, Jennifer Coolidge, Kate McKinnon, Jemaine Clement, and Wednesday breakout star Emma Myers have been announced as the official cast. Most of the roles are still undisclosed, as only Black and Brooks’ Steve and Dawn, respectively, are the only characters revealed. Furthermore, Black's recent video comes after conflicting reports about who would play the protagonist, Steve. There were speculations before Black's casting that Momoa was playing Steve.

The 2025 Minecraft will be true to the beloved video game, but considering the factors that make this title so unique, this is a strange promise.

In the game, Steve is one of many available default player skins. Lacking a backstory, the role opens up endless opportunities for Black, who has experience playing video game characters. Black recently voiced Bowser in 2023’s The Super Mario Bros. Movie. His portrayal received praise from critics and audiences, while his viral song also became one of the movie's notable moments. With the recent reveal of Black playing Steve, he can lend his talents to Minecraft and lead it towards similar success.
