Summary

  • The Power Rangers reboot should take advantage of the opportunity to reinvent the franchise after Cosmic Fury offered a satisfying conclusion to the original series.
  • A young adult reboot could introduce new characters or reimagined versions of classic heroes and explore different themes and storytelling styles from the classic show.
  • The new Power Rangers show could be an all-original series, a remake of the popular Mighty Morphin, or something set in a different continuity within the Power Rangers multiverse.

Power Rangers Cosmic Fury offered a conclusion to the saga’s first 30 seasons, meaning now is the perfect time for a Power Rangers reboot to reinvent the franchise. A young adult Power Rangers series has been in the works for a couple of years, but not a lot is known about the project. Power Rangers Cosmic Fury’s ending felt like a finale not only for the newest season but for the show as a whole, which opens the door for the next Power Rangers show to be a fresh start for the saga.

Power RangersSuper Sentai adaptations have defined the show for the past 30 years. However, considering that Cosmic Fury worked relatively well without relying too much on Sentai footage, there may be a future for Power Rangers beyond the original formula. A young adult reboot could introduce a new generation to the saga, either through original characters or reimagined versions of classic heroes.

Although unlikely, the possibility of a new Super Sentai adaptation cannot be ruled out. The Power Rangers reboot is expected to be an all-original series that will reinvent the franchise for a new generation after 30 years of Sentai adaptations, but whether the current formula will be abandoned entirely remains to be seen. Power Rangers Cosmic Fury satisfyingly wrapped up the saga that began with Mighty Morphin, yet it also left the door open for future stories, namely with Billy learning about Zordon’s return. The Super Sentai adaptation formula has worked for three decades, and series such as King Ohger or Don Brothers could make for fun Power Rangers seasons.

5 A Mighty Morphin Power Rangers Reboot

Mighty Morphin originally ran from 1993 to 1995

One of the easiest ways to reboot Power Rangers in the form of a new TV series would be to remake Mighty Morphin. While Power Rangers is more than Mighty Morphin, it cannot be denied that the franchise is still synonymous with the original series. Characters like Zordon, Alpha, and the original Rangers are still some of pop culture’s most recognizable names, and a Mighty Morphin reboot would benefit from this level of recognition. Power Rangers has rebooted Mighty Morphin before, but it happened as a movie rather than a TV show. Still, 2017’s Power Rangers never got a sequel.

BOOM Studios!’ Power Rangers comics, which never disregarded the events of Mighty Morphin but still told original stories featuring those characters, is a great example of how to reimagine the classic show for a new generation. A live-action Mighty Morphin Power Rangers reboot could bring back elements such as Rita Repulsa, Angel Grove, and putties but in a more mature, serialized story. The show would have the chance to explore Jason, Zack, Kimberly, Billy, Trini, and Tommy in a way that the original series never could. Even though Power Rangers needs a fresh start, revisiting Mighty Morphin would not be a problem if done right.

4 An Original Power Rangers Story With No Ties To The Previous Franchise

A new beginning for the saga

Power Rangers Cosmic Fury, Power Rangers (2017), and Mighty Morphin Power Rangers

One likely scenario is that the new Power Rangers series will have no ties to the previous franchise. This original story would not be part of either the main chronology or the Power Rangers multiverse. The fact that there haven’t been any updates on Power Rangers season 31 strongly suggests that the franchise wants to start something new, and the young adult angle means Power Rangers cannot simply pick up from where Cosmic Fury left off. Therefore, a new set of Rangers with a motif never used in previous shows would be a great way to reignite the saga.

Moving away entirely from the main Power Rangers chronology that seemingly ended with Cosmic Fury could generate some criticism, but it would not be a bad idea. The legacy Power Rangers has built across 30 seasons will not be altered, and a reboot series set in a completely different universe would allow the saga to grow in a different direction. Considering that the 2017 movie reboot was not a box office hit, Power Rangers needs to find another way to reinvent itself and expand its legacy beyond the classic TV shows. A proper reboot would also mean new characters, villains, Zords, and costumes.

3 An Original Story Set In The Power Rangers Multiverse

Power Rangers has an established multiverse

A Power Rangers reboot set in a different continuity would not necessarily have to be completely disconnected from the previous franchise. Thanks to the Power Rangers multiverse, which has technically existed since RPM but was explored far more in the comics, Power Rangers can have multiple continuities at the same time. The Power Rangers TV shows have covered three different universes, with RPM and Dino Charge each taking place in a different timeline from the rest of the series. A new Power Rangers show could acknowledge the saga’s multiverse even if it never features crossovers or other major connections.

A Lord Drakkon story from 5 years ago shows how the next Power Rangers series can reboot the show without disregarding everything that came before.

Some of the best Power Rangers stories in recent years, especially in the comics, have been about the multiverse. The new series could even offer an in-universe explanation for its existence with the help of concepts like time travel and alternate realities. This would be similar to how, for example, J. J. Abrams’s Star Trek reboot took place in a different reality from the TV shows but was still part of the saga’s larger canon. While the multiverse concept has been overused in pop culture, namely with superhero franchises, it is an essential part of the world of Power Rangers.

2 An Adaptation Of BOOM! Studios’ Power Rangers Comics

Including characters like Lord Drakkon and Ranger Slayer

BOOM! Studios’ Power Rangers comics are one of the best things to happen to the franchise since its inception. Starting with Mighty Morphin Power Rangers in 2016 and Go, Go, Power Rangers in 2017, these books have shown how to reinvent the saga while still keeping its essence. All of the events of the TV show are canon to the comics, yet the comics tell stories that never happened in the live-action series. For example, the game-changing Shattered Grid gave Power Rangers its own “Avengers: Endgame” or “Secret Wars,” with countless Rangers from across the multiverse coming together to fight Lord Drakkon.

Another key BOOM! Studios Power Rangers story is that of the Omega Rangers, which see Jason, Trini, and Zack in an adventure that retcons their exits from Mighty Morphin. Ranger Slayer, the World of the Coinless, and Zordon’s backstory are just some other examples of incredible stories that would make for great live-action adaptations. That said, any Power Rangers comics adaptation would necessarily mean a Mighty Morphin reboot, as those stories have mainly followed the classic five teenagers with attitude. Additionally, simply retelling a successful story from relatively recent comics might not be the best way to start a new continuity.

1 A Mighty Morphin Power Rangers’ Legacy Sequel

The next generation of Mighty Morphin Rangers

If Power Rangers wants to revisit Mighty Morphin without remaking the original series or adapting the comics, then a legacy sequel would be the best way to go. Power Rangers: Once & Always saw the return of some of the franchise’s most important names, such as David Yost’s Billy Cranston and Walter Emanuel Jones’ Zack Taylor, and set up possible stories featuring those characters. Likewise, Billy’s role in Cosmic Fury’s ending means he is still looking for Zordon. Lastly, Power Rangers already has established Mighty Morphin legacy characters – Trini’s daughter, Minh, the new Yellow Ranger, and J.J. Oliver, Tommy and Kat’s son, a future S.P.D. Green Ranger.
