Average P Strange that this didn't do better with critics and at the box office. I'd rate it as one of Paul Greengrass's very best movies. Maybe it was too close to the truth about America's intervention in Iraq and, as we all know, we cant handle the truth. Editing and pacing aren't bad and everything else is pretty solid overall. First off Damon is solid but the issue is he never really has any true supporting cast to work off of in this as a sidekick for banter. It's always a rotating door of supporting characters who for the most part are well acted and memorable but don't have much depth and aren' around long. The "Villian" also is just ok and isn't actually on screen much and when he is he isn't that intimidating. Really the main issue is thereis too many different forces at work in this story. There is the WSJ reporter who wants the truth, Damon who is the honest soldier who wants to do the right thing, the Iraqis who are played for fools, Gleeson's organization who wants to uncover the truth, Issac's team who wants to cover up the truth, and the U.S. Government who wants to cover it up. That's 6 sides and most of them don't show up until midway and thats when this film doesn't become boring really or unfocused but rather bloated and any tension the first half developed dissappears because of the constant jumping around to different sides. The ending is solid and very well shot. In fact all the action scenes are really well done with Greengrass's trademarks. The music kind of dissappears in the first half at certain points and gets drowned out by action and I swear is at a low volume than later on also. This really just needed to slim down on fitting so many sides to this story and giving Damon more supporting casts to work with along with a more memorable villian. It's sad because this is ALMOST good. Anyone though who is a fna of any actors in this or the director will be able to enjoy all this. Especially Greengrass fans because his style is all over this and done very well in that regard. I understand this is a very weighted and multi faceted subject but it did need to be slimmed down and more focused telling it in a thriller/action movie like this. This one however is a fantastic movie that will leave you at the edge of your seat. Matt Damon gave a great performance as a strong leader who only wants to get the job done, the right way. It's high paced, exciting and fun to watch all throughout. Highly recommend this movie, especially for Matt Damon fans.
