Kings Take First Step in Solving Their Goaltending Situation With Rittich Re-Signing - Los Angeles Kings News, Analysis and More Skip to main content

On Wednesday afternoon, the Los Angeles Kings announced they had extended goaltender David Rittich to a one-year, $1 million contract extension.

Rittich is now the only goalie with NHL experience signed for next season.

It's unlikely Rittich is the solution in net, but he'll be a solid backup again next season.

He took over from Cam Talbot against the Edmonton Oilers and lost both games, despite allowing just one goals in game four.

Rittich finished last season with a 13-6-3 record, 2.15 GAA, .921 save % and 11 goals saved above expected.

He was also liked in the locker room and will bring a veteran presence in the goalie room.

In many ways, Rittich is an ideal backup and seemed to thrive in the Kings' defensive system.

They'll still need to find their number one, but bringing Rittich back gives them some security moving into next season.

Talbot was very clear he also wanted to re-sign in Los Angeles, so it isn't impossible Rob Blake runs it back with the same goalie room next season.

The numbers during the regular season suggest this wouldn't be a bad idea, but the playoff numbers tell a slightly different story.

A potential change in system could also hurt Rittich and Talbot's numbers.

Either way, the Kings have their backup for next season.
