Anyone else find it funny that the majority of the "outlaws" from OTJ have wanted posters but they themselves don't even commit crimes (per the mechanic at least)?

General Discussion

My wife brought this up with the newest SLD wanted posters drop and I thought it was kind of funny and ironic.

Kind of just a necessity of the gameplay when one of your themes is Outlaws and one of your themes is crimes. If every Outlaw comitted a crime, those themes would be pretty indistinct.

Especially since a lot of Outlaws care about committing crimes,if they were able to trigger off themselves it would be too strong.

What about Justice? I want a drip Sheriff prop

You see, they are well known criminals because they already committed crimes. They’ve gone up in the world and now profit off others committing crimes for them.

Its a real crime pyramid scheme out there!

Crime turtles all the way down.

As long as there's pizza to appease them, we should be safe

Mercenary tokens cannot commit crimes

My guess is they probably could in the beginning but it was considered too strong and reliable.

I think somebody asked Maro on Blogatog and that’s what he said

What do mercenaries have to do with crimes

Mercenaries are outlaws I think

Mercenaries are literally paid to commit crimes, comes with the job title

Not necessarily - mercenaries as a term through history was usually used to refer to soldiers who would fight in a foreign army for coin. That then transferred to basically meaning hired muscle, which often times meant doing ethically dubious things, but (using western examples) could also be mercenaries hired to defend a farmstead or town from bandits

Some commit crimes just for the love of the game

Just use [[Bounty Board]] and put bounties on them when they hit the field. That’ll really put the outlaw flavor to work lol

This is a really fun card in casual EDH, I really like it.

Now every deck can play a [[Mathas, Fiend Seeker]]!

You must not be familiar with “duty to rescue” laws. These guys are guilty af

I think it's funny that of the SLD wanted posters, only one(?) is still alive in lore (Magda). Dack is dead, Greasefang is dead, Kolitas is (presumably?) dead, Norin exists in an unknown time so... who knows?

I think that's kind of the point - cards that are flavored as outlaws but wouldn't haven been good fits for the set, especially since they aren't mechanically outlaws. I like it better than, say, turning the Theros constellation frame into meaning random stuff from Theros that may or may not be enchantments.

Greasefang is dead

is she? The only source of lore I can find on her does not mention anything like it: https://magic.wizards.com/en/news/feature/legends-kamigawa-neon-dynasty-2022-02-11

It was from the MoM story about Tezzeret. I don't think it specifically said it was her, but it was definitely implied.

An Okiba gangmember that used she/her pronouns died, as did a bunch of other members.

No. Not at all. What I do find funny is people's obsessive pedantry over "commit a crime." Lots of boring jokes and bad takes based around that.

I guess they've been framed.

u/Alucart333 avatar

i think the biggest issue is that dealing damage or attacking doesn't count as a crime.

some of these Outlaws are known for crimes in a more violent way..

u/BloodstainedMire avatar

They are guilty of aiding and abetting.

u/leaning_on_a_wheel avatar

No I don’t find that funny

u/DynoTrooper avatar

They should all have Target opponent on them. Just that line of rules text. Just "Target Opponent". Boom, crime for existing.

u/CLRoads avatar

Exactly! Drives me crazy. How could they miss this! Idiots…
