Consider the listening of this CD as an imaginary journey to the "Mystical Land Of Mu." Somewhat jazzy, somewhat mystical psych rock, very tightly integrated song list. Theme wise, with a beginning, middle and end. It's a beautiful, peaceful, imaginary escape. Great theme start to finish, great music and lyrics, musicianship, vocals, all work for the complete experience.

This is the very first Merrell Fankhauser work I've ever encountered, as I wasn't exactly sure as to what to expect - but I definitely found 'Return To MU' to be quite intriguing - yet at the same time - innocent. A sort of psych that I'm personally not all that familiar with. 'Return To MU' is notably dedicated to all - the Hawaiian natives and their -legendary- pacific voyages. Myself, I essentially felt that this CD managed to kick into full gear - especially after the disc's first half as I essentially dug "Prospector's Moon", the innovative "Goin' Down To Atlantis", the well-received "The Land Of MU" and "Mathew's Dream". I wasn't aware that this veteran surf - guitarist / songwriter has been putting out solo material for forty years now. Recommended.
Put it on, sit back and Merrell takes you to another place and time. With great arrangements and lots of famous musicians on-board, Merrell's lyrics guide you on a musicial journey as he rediscovers the lost continent of Mu.
In reference to the reviewer who gave it one star, it is not that bad. Sure it is not as cool as Merrell's surf albums. This CD is more like "the Maui album" than the Mu's album. You are taking the Mu story written in the liner notes to seriously. Merrell is just having fun. I know him personally. He is a lot more level headed than you think. One needs to listen to the music. If you can find this album for a low price it is worth it. I'd recommend his band albums by Mu ("Mu"), The Impacts ("Wipe Out", "Surfing 101", etc.) at any price -- 4.5 stars. Yup, Merrell was a close friend of Randy California and Ed Cassidy. Everyone was saddened by Randy's drowning. Yes, Randy California and Spirit were under rated talent. Sometime give the Spirit song "Torus" a listen, I think Led Zeppelin got some ideas from it.
