A crackdown on drugs leads a burned out cop to take the law into his own hands and seek revenge against villainous drug dealers. Word comes down from above that the United States feels French authorities have been lax on their arrests of the dealers. A violent action feature finds the harried inspector battling his colleagues as much as the criminal element targeted for extermination.

Inspektor Favenin kehrt, nach einer Strafversetzung, auf sein Kommissariat zurück. Zusammen mit Inspektor Barnero versuchen sie Gangsterboss Tavernier dingfest zu machen.
Französisch/Italienischer Krimi aus dem Jahre 1970, in dem Yves Boisset die Regie übernahm. Zum Cast gehören unter anderem: M.Bouquet, G Garko und F.Fabian.
Ich war doch überrascht, wie Kompromisslos es hier zur sache geht. Und das von alles Seiten, ob es nun die Gangster oder die Polizei ist. Vor Frauen wird auch nicht halt gemacht. Dadurch ist der Film und seine Charaktere düster gehalten. Daran musste ich mich erst mal ein wenig dran gewöhnen.
Man bekommt hier einen düsteren kompromisslosen Krimi geboten, der dieses bis zum Ende durchzieht.
Für mich war das wieder eine positive Filmiche Überraschung.
The Cop began life in the aftermath of May 68, a period of unrest in France in which the reality of police brutality was forced before the public. Director Yves Boisset, whose career would show an inclination toward exposing the hypocrisies he found in France, went into production with the attitude of "I don't like the cops, [and] they don't like me either." Düster-zynisches Gewaltdrama reinsten französischen Weines, in Deutschland nicht unglücklich, aber irreführend als "Ein Bulle sieht rot" vermarktet.
In drei aufeinanderfolgenden Akten wird eine Eskalationsspirale beeindruckender Brachialität in Gang gesetzt, so dass vom Ursprungskonflikt nach gerade mal 95 Minuten nichts mehr übrig ist.
Wer hier wen warum in seiner körperlichen Unversertheit schädigt oder ihrer sogar gänzlich beraubt, mögen die Übriggebbliebenen vermutlich selber gar nicht mehr nachvollziehen können.
Da werden lieber Leichenberge aufgetürmt und ohne Rücksicht Tote produziert, bis der letzte desillusioniert zurück bleibt.
Aber Vorsicht: wer sich da jetzt auf exploitative Gewaltexzesse unter hohem Tempo erfreut, der wird sicher bei Michel Bouquet's spießbürgerlich-kaltem Auftreten etwas verwirrt mit den Augen rollen, wenn er für sehr viel künstlich austretenden Lebenssaft sorgt. Die Darstellung…
Takes a confident filmmaker to include a prison break we never see. That or Yves Boisset was told to cut 15 minutes and that's what went.
The Cop has a simple, compelling plot. A gangster, the Mandarin, punishes a club owner for disobeying him. That leads the club owner's pal, played by Gianni Garko, to avenge his friend, which in turn leads cop Michel Bouquet to seek similar revenge. That's it, and I love nothing more in a crime film than a simple, straightforward plot that is constantly pushing forward.

Vermutlich würden viele Polizisten manchmal gerne gegen das ein oder andere Gesetz verstoßen, um einen verzwickten Fall zu lösen oder bestimmte Ganoven unschädlich zu machen. Auf eine ungewöhnliche Art und Weise ist dieser gewalttätige und selbst für einen Film noir doch sehr spärlich ausgeleuchtete Krimi aufgrund der Vorgehensweise des Inspektor Favenin dann tatsächlich befriedigend, wenn es um den Wunsch nach Bestrafung geht.
Die Gewaltszenen sorgten seinerzeit für Aufsehen, sind aber für die heutigen Sehgewohnheiten fast schon bieder. Ansonsten kämpft der Film mit seinen stumpfen Figurprofilen und der eher vorgetäuschten Ambivalenz zwischen Fallaufklärung und Racheakt. Es ist einer dieser Filme, die sich einfach ausgelebt haben...
One of Yves Boisset first crime thrillers it sets one a tone of uncompromising shared violence in the opening scene and just goes from there one action leading to the next retribution so there's no escape regardless of side between law and crime one happens to be. Atmospheric and very uncompromising. It literally climax with Françoise Fabian calling Michel Bouquet main cop a bastard. Terrific cast also includes the likes of Gianni Garko, Michel Constantin and Adolfo Celi. It always amuses me that Boisset got his start as a Riccardo Freda assistant as he might be the least fun relevant genre filmmaker of the 70s, this is all businness, very bleak and sordid often suggesting a Robert Hussein film with more muscle. As usual Boisset facility of rendering violence as an extension of paranoid agressive society comes through.

Presumo que o fato de tão poucas pessoas o tenham visto aqui se deve ao não descobrimento dele pelo mercado americano, pois esse é um polar trincadaço que merece ser visto.

Was 1970 schockierend und brutal war, sodaß dieser Titel mehr als 30 Jahre auf dem Index landete, verblaßt nach so langer Zeit. Stilistisch ist hier nur eine nüchterne und ausgesprochen düstere Grundstimmung bemerkbar, aber die Todsünde eines jeden Films: (selbst bei kurzer Laufzeit) langweilig.
This flick took me by surprise. A tough, stylish and very well made French crime film that almost feels like late Jean-Pierre Melville. Not sure why this isn't more known, really. One of Gianno Garko's finest.
A francia policier igazi Dirty Harry-je nem a démoni Delon vagy a csibészes Belmondo, hanem ez a pocakos, kopaszodó kispolgár Bouquet, akinél a tévé ül az asztalfőn a szolid családi vacsorákon, de amikor lelövik a zsarubarátot, módszeresen ledarálja az összes felelőst, hősködés nélkül csak arra ügyelve, hogy sose ő legyen a pisztoly csúnyább végén - az igazi hősök ezúttal mellékszereplők (zsarolt húg, megvert anarchista), Boisset kivételes vendetta-filmjében nemcsak a narratív sorrend fordított (a főgonosz bűnöstől tart a legártatlanabbig), de a hagyományos műfaji értékrend is tótágast áll.
Auch wenn hier vieles aus heutiger Sicht bieder und angestaubt herüberkommt, trägt dies doch nur zum Grundkonflikt des Films bei. Der so harmlos wirkende Polizeibeamte wurde strafversetzt (!) und assistiert seinem ehemaligen Schüler, der schon selbst fast am System verzweifelt, bei dessen Ermittlungen - stachelt ihn dann sogar zu einer Verfolgung an, bei der dieser dann stirbt. Der nun folgende Rache-Lauf war anfangs für mich als Zuschauer noch willkommenes Ventil. Allerdings kennen seine Methoden dann keine Grenzen mehr (obwohl der eigentliche Oberbösewicht ja erschossen wurde) und so sehen wir dann durch die Rachegier hinter der biederen Fassade den Abgrund/das ‚Monster‘. Und daher muss auch das Ende, als die Eigenerkenntnis ihn stoppte, noch tragisch sein.
Sehenswertes, toll gefilmtes und auch in Nebenrollen gut gesetztes „Altwerk“, welches schon damals, noch in der Blütezeit des harten Copfilms durch seine Heftigkeit zum Reflektieren anregt.

A textured work of weighty themes and performances as uncomfortably controlled as the camera work, this doomily brooding chokehold of inexorable vindictiveness is as cynically downbeat and hopeless as noir gets.
