35 & 36: Building a Dream Career with Hollywood TV Writer Jenn Kao - Lucifer, Leverage, Daybreak, Once Upon a Time in Wonderland, Emerald City

What does it take to break into Hollywood and rise in a competitive field like TV writing?

Join me in a conversation with Jenn Kao, a TV drama writer who specializes in thrillers, sci fi and horror. She’s working on a drama pilot for Peacock and was a co-executive producer on Daybreak by Netflix. Jenn’s also written for Leverage, Emerald City, Once Upon a Time in Wonderland, and Lucifer.

Jenn went to film school at UCLA and majored in English at Stanford, where I met her our freshman year.

Jen is Chinese-American and grew up in the far west suburbs of Chicago, where her parents co-founded their town’s first Chinese school. Now she lives in Eagle Rock with her husband and two kids.

In Part 1, Jenn talks about her path to Hollywood, her parent's influence on her career, and how she handles rejection and competition.

In Part 2, Jenn shares about what it's like to be an Asian-American woman in Hollywood, how she balances family with career, and advice for those hoping to break into TV writing.
