Will Smith Slapping Chris Rock Wasn’t That Big of a Deal

Firstly, I completely get why it was shocking. I remember the moment it happened and all of social media going crazy and trying to figure out if it was a skit because it seemed so unbelievable.

It was very surprising. No question.

But why was it surprising?

What actually happened? In simple terms.

A guy said something rude about some dude’s wife. That dude slapped him. 20 minutes later, he apologized, in front of everyone who saw it. Then they all went to parties and home to their mansions. It’s over.

If these had been poor people, no one would even remember this. He didn’t hit him as hard as he could. They didn’t continue to fight. The whole interaction was a minute long and no one was injured. If it wasn’t on TV, who would care?

I’ve heard a lot of people say something along the lines of “that was disgusting, he should be in prison if he wasn’t famous” or something along those lines. …but, respectfully, no. Not here in the real world. People get into arguments all the time. Making fun of someone’s wife (especially over a medical condition) is likely to get you slapped at a bbq. And it would be a story people remember…but not a damn controversy for years.

Again, it was shocking because of where it happened. It makes sense he would be banned from coming back. But the actual thing that happened was damn near nothing.

TLDR: A guy slapping someone for being rude to his wife isn’t a big deal and we only care because they are famous and it happened on TV.

It's because historically the Academy Awards were very prestigious and therefore a certain level of decorum was expected.

I understand that's no longer the case, and young people may not see any issue, but for older folks it was certainly shocking, disgusting and something you'd never expect to see in that environment.

Edited

John Cena was on stage butt naked this year. Holding a nominee card to cover his penis. The Oscars haven’t been the serious thing of the past in a long time.

I’m very chill when it comes to things like that, but why was John cena naked presenting an award?

I still don’t understand why he did that. I just think it’s a good example of the kind of stuff that happens during the show. Two men getting into an argument where one of them hits the other one isn’t something that I find so grossly offensive that I think it’s way worse than a naked man. It’s all just kind of tacky behavior and it’s a double standard to act like the slap was some historical moment

A comedian doing his job made a light hearted joke about his wife, who is a public figure. Will's reaction was insane and way out of proportion, it was assault over essentially nothing.

This has been rehashed a million times.

Also wtf BBQ are you going to where people are just slapping eachother? Lol

Yes, he slapped him. He shouldn’t have. My point is that’s not that big of a deal to be emotionally invested years later. It’s not “insane”. He didn’t even hit him that hard. Will is twice his size and an action movie star who trained with Muhammad Ali’s trainers. I’m sure he could have dropped him if he was just “insane”.

He was emotional and inappropriate. But, the fact this is still what comes up every time Wil’s name comes up, years later is silly.

Yet here we are with you posting about years later.

I’m posting about it because every single popular post about Will Smith on this or any other website has a reference to it. Every single one. Not some. Not most. Every single one.

He's a comedian telling a joke. Smith was a pissy little baby who acts like his wife's bitch boy while she fucks other dudes. Fuck that guy.

exactly

Fuck that guy.

Someone should since his wife won't

No Ricky Gervais is a comedian, Chris Rock is a twat, if you’re gonna be offensive, be funny

Ricky Gervais is the least funny “comedian” I’ve ever watched. His jokes and delivery are about as flat as it comes.

Yeah u don’t get comedy bro

Ricky Gervais stopped being a comedian years ago. Now he's just an angry bitch who is upset that the low hanging fruit and easy targets he built an entire career around are off limits to him.

If your first example of a good comedian is Gervais, then your opinion of comedy is not important to me.

He should’ve slapped the guy that was sleeping with his wife, not the guy that made a joke with his wife

Maybe he did. Who cares wtf these people do in their bedrooms.

Update for you he didn’t

Don’t care. I’m not invested in their lives like you are

If some guy got shot at a BBQ, people wouldn't care. Yes, obviously it was a bigger deal because people were famous. But it was a comedian getting assaulted at the Oscars, then the guy who assaulted him getting handed the Best Actor Oscar like 20 minutes later. It was wild.
