meet Kailyn & Ryan

Thank you so much for the opportunity to talk a little about Darkness Calls the Tiger. What follows is a quick first-person snippet from both of my main characters as they are at the beginning of the book. Basically this is their response to “tell me about yourself.”
Kailyn Moran
My adopted people have a story that speaks of a time so dark, the sun will turn his back on the mountains and swallow the moon. It is then that the sharaw—tiger’s little sister bound in the form of a woman—will come prowling, exacting revenge on the darkness.
The Legend of the Sharaw was a curse pronounced on me when I was nine summers. I do not know if received the attention of the storyteller was because I am the only daughter of the American missionary or because of my amber-colored eyes, but the result is the same: I am an outcast despite the fact that I love the Kachin people and my home in the Himalayan Mountains. I do not truly believe it is my fault that my mother and brother died, but who knows what the Supreme God plans?
Ever since I have studied and done everything my father asked of me, yet I have no place to call home. My world is predictable, if not entirely pretty, until the new missionary arrives and destroys my hope of taking over the mission from my father.
Still we find a rhythm, a way to survive, until the flames of war lick the feet of the mountains, scorching the jungle, setting fire to everything I have ever loved, and striking the torch of all-consuming revenge in my heart. Ryan’s offer of refuge is a gentle sprinkle in the face of a raging forest fire. I will destroy the man who lit the fire, even if I am burned to ash with him.

I arrived in the land of mountains and mist with a bag of medicine, a guitar, and easy dreams of becoming a hero to the Kachin people. My mother, God rest her soul, saw something in me that is either long since buried or never existed in the first place. But I am nothing more than a bumbling bear—too blond, too big, with too little understanding of the language and culture, and with too few answers in the face of deep pain that echoes my own.
Clearly Burma is as far from my family farm in Indiana as one might think.
Still, I run school, teach the boys English, math, and baseball, and do what I can to make life easier for everyone in the village.
Most of the time I wonder why I’m here, but it’s easier to see God when I sit above the village and listen to Kai read poems to the orphan boy, Tu Lum. Kai is one of the most brilliant people I know, but she’s hurting and scared, and I only ever seem to make things worse for her.
What is the point of being strong, being a light, if you can’t help? Though I don’t know the answer, I will stand guard over the dark silhouette of mountains, their sharp edges silent until I know what to do otherwise.

The cover is beautiful and the story sounds amazing. I’ve yet to read one of Janyre’s books but they are certainly on my tbr. Can speed reading be my superpower because I’m not sure I’m ever going to catch up to all the books on my list at this point.
