  • Bette Davis Owns the Role of Queen Elizabeth I and Raleigh is a Dream!

I'm a senior gal who loved all Bette Davis movies as a kid, and remembered her magnificent portrayal as Queen Elizabeth I in two different films. Thanks to eBay, I now own them both: The Private Lives of Elizabeth and Essex with Errol Flynn, the earlier one; and now this later one, The Virgin Queen--her role reprise so many years later which is about Sir Walter Raleigh. Davis owns the character! No other actress matches her wonderful rendition, with mannerisms of Henry VIII. I also admired watching the acting expertise of early ingenue Joan Collins in the supporting role. And Richard Todd was brilliant as Raleigh. Though I also own other dvds on QEI--the two Elizabeth ones with Gwyneth Paltrow (who is lovely as the very young Princess and Queen)--noone compares, truly, to Bette Davis--she ...

  • 1955 Bette Davis is Queen Elizabeth I of the 1550's

With Richard Todd co-starring as (Sir) Walter Raleigh & a very young Joan Collins vying for his affections in competition with Queen Elizabeth the 1st (Bette Davis), known as the "Virgin Queen," because she would not marry herself to anyone but all of England, this is one of the rarest of Bette Davis' films that's now in color. Once you've viewed the film it'll be self-evident why this film being in color makes it all the more splendid. The combination of The Virgin Queen's orange red wig & Bette Davis' turquoise eyes would be lost in black & white. The Renaissance period costumes are also regal with royal colors & textures, ta boot. Davis, Todd & Collins all give stellar performances that make this version of "The Virgin Queen" my favorite.
