Mike Oldfield – Platinum

Very fine sounding cassette and a recommended choice if you are looking for the original version of the Album that actually has "Sally" on it.

I’m slowly working my way through these MO remasters and comparing them to the original pressings. This remaster of platinum is brighter and less bass than the original pressing. It generally doesn’t sound as alive. Isn’t it crazy in 2023 a 40 year old pressing sounds better than something made 10 years ago or so.

Some people still get confused about this record and the 'Sally' track. So I want to make it clear: 'Sally' is a song that was only on the first UK pressing (Vinyl + Cassettes) for a very short time. 'Sally'" was replaced with the song 'Into Wonderland'. This replacement was done so quick, that ALL later pressings in UK and ALL pressings from other countries do not have this track 'Sally', no matter what is written on the cover or label! You can easy identify the 'Sally' track by the vocal line 'Sally, I am not your Gorilla' sung by Mike Oldfield himself. This track was never officially re-released on any other record. Even the year 2000 HDCD CD remasters lists this song wrong, 'Sally' is not on that CD. (In my personal opinion I think, back then in 1979 it was taken off the record and replaced because Mike Oldfield did not like his own singing. All other rumors about it are a little rediculous, like the Richard Branson Story. Branson never cared about musical issues on his Virgin releases. But that is just my personal guess.) The replacement song is easy to identify by the female sung vocal line including the words "...Into Wonderland...", sung by Wendy Roberts.

Can anybody please tell me in which tracks Francisco centeno plays bass? Mike Oldfield is not credited for any bass on this album. Am I right?

Here I have a black-label copy with Sally, runout V-2141-A-3 with letter D opposite and V-2141-B-4 with F opposite. Is this same as this "B1" entry? Am I a millionaire now?

I listen to this album since it's been released. Everyone around look at me with a wtf look when I spin it .

I have the LP with the "Sally" track with "-B-2 in the B-side runout, but at the cover is the track name "Into Wonderland". I suppose, that the cover is not the original. Am I right? I did not listen it yet ;-) I will confirm later ...

This couldn't be happening in Yugoslavia in 2002. Yugoslavia didn't exist in 2002. So it's false information.

The first Mike Oldfield album to break from the tradition of a single long composition spread over multiple record sides into 1 long composition over 1 side (Platinum Parts 1-4) and several shorter pop-style songs on the other. Part 4 of Platinum (subtitled North Star) featured an excerpt from the Phillip Glass album (also called North Star) but converted into progressive rock through the addition of bass, drums and guitars. It was a brilliant cross-genre marketing move that drawn listeners to explore both artists, and allowed Mike to claim minimalism street cred and Phlllip to claim his music is accessible to a more rock oriented audience. Recording quality is good, dynamic and punchy. My copy replaces "Sally" with "Into Wonderland."
