From Detroit Waldorf School
Detroit Waldorf School is a nonprofit educational community dedicated to inspiring and empowering a diverse population of students to reach their fullest potential as creative, collaborative, and responsible global citizens.
Music Program
The music curriculum is a valuable part of the whole educational experience in a Waldorf school. In third grade, students begin to play violin. By fifth grade, students may continue with violin or switch to another string instrument or a band instrument. From fifth through eighth grades, all students play in either a string orchestra or instrumental band (winds and percussion).

My children attended DWS K-8. They are now at Kalamazoo College and Grosse Pointe South. I did my research and decided on Waldorf when they were young and they attended a Waldorf pre-school called Blue Bird House. We found Waldorf after events where we met Waldorf students and were impressed by the maturity and character of the children.
To address another review here, Waldorf introduces reading in 1st grade rather than pre-school. They spend pre-school /K building social skills, and listening to stories filled with rich vocabulary, rather than reading the "cat sat on the mat " repeatedly. They appropriately introduce reading in 1st grade when kids are developmentally ready. While they are of course "behind" their peers in 1st and second grade they catch up by 3rd. By 4th they surpass their public school peers in reading and vocabulary and continue on that trajectory.
We are forever grateful for the gift of Waldorf and the love of learning instilled in our children.

This place is positively magical! It’s the educational equivalent of wholistic medicine. Strings, foreign language, dance, art, mathematics, spelling, all sprinkled with outdoor activities. How many kids love going to school?! Mine do.
