The quotation comes from former German president Horst Köhler, at the 20th anniversary celebration of the tearing down of the Berlin Wall—a literal barrier between East Germany and West Germany.
This should be a fairly straightforward Final Jeopardy! today, as long as players can do the requisite math, remembering what happened on November 9, 1989. It’s clear to me that the writers put November 9 into the clue in order to steer players away from June 4 of the same year—namely, Tiananmen Square.
Also, a clue about a historical event such as this one has got me thinking: Jeopardy!—even just the current syndicated version—began airing before a number of massively significant news events—now historical events—took place. The show faced widespread pre-emptions in the wake of the Challenger disaster in January 1986, September 11, 2001, the Nixon funeral in 1994, even the entry of the United States into the Iraq War in 2003. In a Jeopardy! context, though: the Berlin Wall was still up as Season 6 of the show was beginning in the fall of 1989.

Remembering the Berlin wall came down 51st anniversary of Kristallnacht made this a gimme for me.
On November 9, 1989 I was in my first year at University of Cincinnati. Going to classes that morning, a student from the Hillel center at the campus was handing out fliers with information about Kristallnacht. I’m not sure that I had hear of it before that day, but it was the most in-depth education I’d had on the subject.
That afternoon, after my final class of the day and then dinner, I stopped in the lobby of my dorm to check my mailbox. My 18th birthday had been on the 2nd, and I was still receiving cards that week. After checking for mail, I decided to go to the TV in the lobby to check on the evening nightly news programs, and was shocked to see images of people climbing on the Wall. I was waiting for the East German guards to start firing on them. I was fixed on the TV as I watched what was unfolding. It was a day with such remarkable book ends, and it will stay with me for a long time.

I’ll never forget in the following years after the fall of the wall, a huge piece of it, probably 15 X 10 feet, was on display at the South Coast Plaza Mall in Southern California. I recall someone asking for directions to Saks Fifth Ave., and my reply, “Keep walking in this direction until you run into the Berlin Wall, then make a left, can’t miss it.”
I had a colleague who was visiting Berlin on vacation when the wall came down, and he brought a small piece of it back with him. So that date is easy for me to remember. The rest fell into place.
Yeah, the date made it easy to connect to the landmark.
My local library has a memorial wall in the front of the building (near the lawn) that holds a piece of the Berlin Wall…here in Mtn. View, CA.

People should probably be a little more considerate saying this is too easy for a final jeopardy. It’s only easy if you know the answer.

Well, the Berlin Wall was up for a little under 30 years….and that is a little under 30 years after it came down. So, I’m going to guess that is the date that it was down for as long as it was up. Hard to believe it’s been down longer than it was up.
That’s exactly right! I wish there was a special word for that kind of milestone.
I think there should be such a word. I always note things like that, such as “been alive as long after a parent’s death as before” or “have lived married as long since the wedding as lived before it” (then “twice as long 🥰). I bet Shakespeare could have thought of a good word for it had he needed one.
I found the use of the word “edifice” confusing. An edifice normally refers to a building.
Agreed. I don’t think I’ve ever heard a wall described as an “edifice” before. Standard dictionaries seem to agree. May have been what misled Ben.

I’ll stick up for a fellow Ben, but he could’ve made the same point with a few hundred less. More likely a math error. Contestants may behave differently this season knowing about the existence of the 2nd chance tournament. He did break $10k w/o the benefit of a Daily Double, but there’s going to be a lot of these by the time Cris is done.
