Thirty-five hours, twenty-nine minutes, and fifteen seconds.
I should know. I counted myself."
Amidst the gaslit alleys and cobblestone streets of Victorian London, two killers find themselves entangled in a waltz they cannot escape.
Alina Lis, a botanist and hobbyist poisoner, has a pastime of killing unsavory men in her twisted sense of poetic justice. When she targets the conceited playboy, Silas Forbes, only to find him in her apothecary the following week, she discovers human men are the least of her problems.
The pair's unlikely association sparks gossip among affluent society. As their mysterious bond deepens, a chilling truth emerges-concealed identities, lurking foes, and questions as plentiful as the hydra's head brew within this haunting Gothic tale of violent passion.
Will Silas and Alina find themselves in each other's arms, or will the shadows of their past keep them apart?
THE POISONER is a GOTHIC DARK ROMANCE with secondary themes in HORROR, SUPERNATURAL, and SCIENCE FICTION. Please take care and read ALL author notes on sensitive content in the front of the book and on the author's website.

Editorial Reviews
Review
"If you're at all interested in the "Gothic" as a category of literature (or of expression in general), you'll recognize the powerful thematic elements Ophelia experiments with. They dabble in matters of class, femininity, fashion, the academy and the animal, and leave you with an urge to research further or read the book again." - Camille Kolo, Goodreads.
"The Victorian London setting heightens the gothic atmosphere and the sense of Alina's misplacement in the world as a woman driven by her intellect and curiosity." - Nikki, Goodreads.
"All the pieces just slide into place- twisting and turning what you thought you knew about them." - Samantha Lynn, Goodreads.
"...suspect a satisfying, neat, little love story before Ophelia throws you to your knees and makes you beg for whatever their dramatic, alluring and oft times grotesque book is willing to give you." - Camille Kolo, Goodreads.
"This is precisely the type of book that whisks you out of a reading slump, only to plunge you right back in" - Sophie, Goodreads.

About the author
I.V. Ophelia hails from a small town in New England and has inhabited NYC for a little over half a decade. She is known for her gothic Victorian vampire series, The Poisoner.
When she is not writing the most unhinged thing she can think of, Ophelia spends most of her time as a full-time artist, 19th-century gown collector, animal mom, antique furniture hoarder, world traveler, and overall menace.

First I want to preface that this is my first dark romance book. I have read other horror/thrillers in the past but this is the first to involve romance. I found out about the book and the author with her amazing marketing on Instagram. Huge kudos! I know how hard it is to stand out especially with the Instagram algorithm.
The writing was really good. It was very smooth and didn’t have that usual indie debut book writing feel where the prose is very choppy and inconsistent. It was perfect enough to get sucked into the story.
Spoilers below👇
Since I am new to the genre, it was big jarring to see the cat and mouse game happen in the first half of the book, with all of the traps, catch and release. It wasn’t doing it for me TBH but I acknowledge that that’s a trope that a lot of people look for. I just realized that it’s really not my cup of tea 😅 I kept going because I really enjoyed the writing but wasn’t too convinced that the MMC and FMC would get past that. But once they did, I was pleasantly surprised at how much I really liked them as a couple and the drama between Silas, Alina, and Viktor.
On to the cons:
There were several chapters that felt like vignettes of Alina’s life as she was navigating this, which left me a bit confused of the timeline. But I guess it reflected how she was feeling with everything going on?
There’s a lot of questions I still have like: how was her father killed exactly? It’s alluded that she made a mistake and killed him when trying to kill the assistant but I really wish we would’ve been told how exactly. And after Luka tortured and basically SAd Alina during the rice incident, why did Silas say he had a plan that only Luka would help with but then proceeded on just feeding (threesome style) with Luka? He really did nothing and just gave up on the woman he mated with? Not sure if he was just riding it out and waiting in his father to show up? Or if that was his way of being there for her?
Hopefully we get more info in this with the next book which I will def read ☺️
Overall I enjoyed it! It’s twisted and new for me. Don’t think I will continue with the dark romance genre but I will continue with book 2 for this series! 😁 I would recommend, but yes, definitely don’t skip the kinks/trigger warning page at the beginning. It’s not for the faint of heart 🖤
I will say READ THE TRIGGER WARNINGS and make sure that your up for this gothic story. It is devious and deliciously dark but with that dark comes the things that make the skin crawl.
5/5
Important to know is the FMC and MMC are NOT good people, both of them will dismember a corpse without lifting an eyebrow. Both rabid animals in their own way with a blatant disregard for human life.
What do you get when two morally gray/black killers meet by chance and try their best to kill eachother? Set it in Victorian London and you get the Poisoner.
Alina is one of my favourite FMC I've come a cross, fierce, intelligent and a moral compass that's unhinged. That moral compass leads her right into view for the MMC who finds her murderous tendencies just adorable.
Silas starts to stalk Alina with the only reason being she's cute, smells good and he likes to play with his food, his intention is kill and eat her. But after a failed poisoning he takes her every murder attempt as advanced flirting and the internal bleeding really makes the butterflys flutter in his stomach.
The vampiri are different from a lot of vampires I've read about and I'm looking forward to learn more about them.
This is a DARK romance and if you're expecting to read a fluffy vampire book you're gonna be disappointed, some themes are very dark and triggering so be sure to read the trigger warnings.
The story is far from over at the end and I'm on the edge of my seat to see where the story is gonna takes us in the next book.

Utterly delectable. I devoured the gem that is this debut novel. I was so eager for The Poisoner to be out in the wild, my sights have been set on it for months. The Poisoner goes straight to my favorite books ever.
Alina and Silas were exquisite together, the bantering and the thrill of the hunt were quite fun. The storyline was gripping, the writing style pulled me in from the very beginning. I adored the Victorian setting, the gothic atmosphere. I’m such a suck3r for those kinds of books. For a smart girl, Alina sometimes was actually quite blinded by her curiosity (it’s okay, we all have our moments) and Silas, for a Vipera, was quite a sweetie when it came to her.
The anticipation regarding this book was killing me and I’m elated to say that it did not disappoint. I cannot say that the ending was what I was ‘’expecting’’, but simultaneously, it’ll fuel supreme angst for the next installment (Silas *shake my head*). The author, I.V Ophelia, stated that The Poisoner is a combination between Penny Dreadful and Crimson Peak and I clearly see it. I don’t want to say more in fear of inadvertedly spoiling something. Just know that I ADORED IT.
