Dear Sam Houston Community,

I wanted to update you on the reason for the lockdown at 3:04 p.m. at Sam Houston High School. There was a report of a person with a weapon who was being pursued in a neighborhood nearby, and we immediately placed the school on lockdown to protect all students and staff.

Once it was determined that the person was not heading to our campus, we began the process of clearing classes room-by-room and transitioning the school into a shelter. Because of the timing of the lockdown, there was still a large student and staff presence at the school. At 3:41, we were moved to a shelter and at 3:44 the shelter was lifted and all students and staff on campus were dismissed.

We know that a lockdown is scary for students, families and staff. As a reminder, all our staff are trained on what to do during a lockdown, and students participate in regular drills. Everyone on campus did an outstanding job following the protocols today. We know this doesn’t remove the fear, but it means they know what to do in an emergency.

When a lockdown happens, we ask families not to come to campus, and we want to share more about why we ask that of you.

1. Police are investigating and ask the public to stay away from the campus so they don’t impede their investigation.

2. The campus will not be accessible to anyone outside of the building during a lockdown.

3. Extra traffic in the area creates congestion, making it more difficult for emergency responders to operate.

During a lockdown, staff members won’t answer the phones because they are following proper lockdown protocols. With that said, we know you’re worried and we’ll do our best to keep you informed by email, text messages, the campus Facebook page, the Security Tracker and the Arlington ISD app. These will have the same information so you can choose which works best for you. We encourage you to visit our Safety Page to learn more about our response plans.

Our counseling team provided these five tips to help you talk to your children about the lockdown today:

1. Create a safe environment that allows children to express their feelings.

2. Encourage open communication where children can talk about their experiences and emotions. Be a good listener without pressuring them to share more than they’re comfortable with.

3. Use honest, age-appropriate and simple language. Avoid unnecessary, overwhelming details, but be truthful in addressing their concerns.

4. Validate their emotions by letting them know it’s okay to feel a range of emotions and that their reactions are normal.

5. Maintain routine and stability, which can be reassuring for children.

We appreciate your patience today and thank you for working with us to keep all students and staff at Sam Houston High School safe.

Sincerely,
Juan Villarreal, Principal
