This weekend, Kia America is partnering with local Kia dealers to provide free anti-theft software upgrades to Kia owners. At the Milwaukee County Zoo, a clinic has opened up shop in the parking lot, with Kia technicians installing the software updates and a window decal to discourage future criminal activity.Thousands of Kia and Hyundai cars have been stolen in Milwaukee and nationwide thanks to step-by-step theft instructions being posted online years ago. Many are stolen off the street and taken for a destructive joy ride. For Kia owners who haven't fallen victim, they have still lived with the fear. "Thank God I hadn't had problem with it, but there's always one day, you never know," said Maria Story, who had the anti-theft software installed on her Kia Friday. "You could come out of shopping and go, 'Where's my car?'"The software upgrade includes a longer-sounding alarm and a tweak in the ignition to make the vehicles harder to steal. Technicians update the cars, so the key must be in the ignition switch to turn the vehicle on."I feel safer now that I don't have to worry that someone could break-in, because they told me they could break it into the ignition so easy," said Story. "I feel safer now that this thing is on here. That will help."The fix typically takes about 20-30 minutes, and Kia offers a lounge for car owners to relax in while their car is being worked on. "I feel good, I do," said Kelley DeLisle, who had the fix installed Friday. "If anything, I'm more confident than maybe I was before I came in here. And I can not say it enough: I was in and out of here in 15 minutes."The smooth process is music to many Kia owners' ears, especially after so many have dealt with thefts over the last several years. "I drove up, they took my VIN number, probably to make sure that I do qualify," said DeLisle. "Then they told me step by step what they were going to be doing. I then got out the car, and they just took it from there. I went into this wonderful temporary lounge, and seriously, I'm not even finished with my water. That's how fast it was. Seriously, it's one of the best things that I've ever been through having to do with an automobile, because it could be stressful, whether you're going for brakes, muffler, whatever the case may be. This is the best. Seriously. Five stars, and then some."Kia has been holding these events for months now around the country, with Milwaukee hosting its first clinic back in October of 2023.
