The latest news, a new script, the cast, release date and everything we know about the planned new Mistborn Movie based on Brandon Sanderson’s Mistborn: The Final Empire
Kelsier, Breeze, Vin and the Lord Ruler himself. We’ve all been extremely excited to see the Brandon Sanderson Mistborn Movie ever since it was first optioned by Hollywood in 2012. But there’s been no new announcements, and now it seems Brandon has written a completely new script titled “Mistborn: The Final Empire”.

What we know about the Mistborn movie so far
After entering negotiations and even selling the rights to a producer who didn’t get it done before they lapsed, we still don’t have 100% confirmation of the movie – or even a rumoured TV show. But we do know that there is an IMDb page (see it here), which lists it as “in development” and doesn’t say much since anyone could have put that up there.
But it does tell us that Brandon has changed his approach to getting a Mistborn movie out…
Mistborn Movie News: Who is working with Brandon on the Project?
So far, Sanderson is joined on the Mistborn project by F. Scott Frazier who wrote xXx: Return of Xander Cage and is said to be penning the upcoming Gears of War movie.
And if Brandon Sanderson has his way, we’ll finally have news of the long-awaited Mistborn movie adaptation set in the Cosmere universe soon…

About the Mistborn Movie Cast
There is no official cast for the Mistborn movie as yet. Yet we can have some fun with fancasts…
A lot of people have said they’d love to see Nikolaj Coster-Waldau (Jaime Lannister) or Chris Pine as Kelsier, Collin Firth or Matt Berry as Breeze (wow, two totally different styles there) and Dafne Keen or Lara Mcdonnell as Vin, if not a completely unknown up-and-comer.
Everyone seems to agree that Lance Reddick would make an awesome Sazed, or maybe even Djimon Hounsou. With Joaquin Phoenix or Mads Mikkelsen as the Lord Ruler.

A Possible Mistborn Movie Release Date
Again, there’s no official release date, and if we are to speculate it’s important to note that a movie usually takes between 4 and 5 years to produce.
That means that, even if Brandon announces today that the movie is a go, it will probably only be released somewhere around 2027 – but even that is just conjecture.
Why is the movie taking so long?
As Sanderson mentions on his blog and interviews, the delays stem from production companies who “option” the Mistborn movie rights, and then try and figure out how they are going to make it.
One example is Paloppa Pictures, who apparently optioned the film back in 2012 but couldn’t make it happen. Their option rights expired in 2014. From interviews, Sanderson says that these kinds of option deals are what’s been stalling the process. And he’s excited to see producers coming forward willing to buy the rights outright.
Rumours are that Brandon is very protective over Mistborn and that he has turned down many offers, simply because the producers want him to relinquish too much control.
What about rumours of a Mistborn TV series?
There were some rumours of a Mistborn TV show, which seems to stem from Sanderson’s own musings to fans about potentially going multi-platform/medium. The idea was to make Mistborn book 1 into a movie, book 2 into a series and the third into a film again. Nothing, again, is confirmed.
The Mistborn: The Final Empire premise
On the devastated and ash-covered planet Scadrial in Brandon Sanderson’s Cosmere universe (the same as his Stormlight Archive series), the Lord Ruler, the “Sliver of Infinity” reigns with absolute power and ultimate terror, almost as a deity. While the Skaa people slave away in misery and fear. (A plot point inspired by the idea of what would happen if Voldemort won at the end of Harry Potter.)
Until, Kelsier, a broken half-Skaa thief trapped in the depths of the deepest dungeon discovers within himself the powers of the fabled Mistborn. A thief by trade, Kelsier plans to save the world in typical criminal fashion: by assembling a gang of underground “thugs” [sic] and organising the epic fantasy caper of the century.

The Mistborn movie will be based on the epic high fantasy Mistborn trilogy, the first of which has the same name as the screenplay:

The Well of Ascension (Mistborn Book 2)

The Hero of Ages (Mistborn Book 3)
Humanity is doomed! The Deepness (the thing in the mists) is growing more active, the ashfalls are getting heavier and the earthquakes are getting worse. Maybe it was a mistake trying to end the Final Empire? At least there’s a new Mistborn in one Elend Venture. The problem is Vin can’t even talk to him, or the thing they accidentally set free from the well might overhear them. Is there a chance at salvation? Is there a hero of ages?
