About
Commissioned by Nevada silver heiress Theresa Fair Oelrichs in 1899, toward the end of the GIlded Age, architect Stanford White modeled Rosecliff after the Grand Trianon, the garden retreat of French kings at Versailles. The house was completed in 1902, at a reported cost of $2.5 million. Its elegant ballroom is the largest in Newport, and Mrs. Oelrichs hosted fabulous entertainments there, including a fairy tale dinner and a party featuring famed magician Harry Houdini. The facade of Rosecliff recently was shown during HBO's hit series "The Gilded Age."

    The Renovation Needs Rethinking
I so wanted to love this house after seeing it in the original The Great Gatsby. It had just undergone a renovation and re-opened. But their mistake was taking up half of the second floor with an exhibit that tied in with China. You could tell 1 wing had been a set of bedrooms but was now a gallery and there was no history to tell you what it had been. All the other bedrooms, including the owners' bedroom suites were closed off and not available. Two small rooms were available to see. But Rosecliff needs to put out historical information around the rooms. Portraits of people but you didn't know who they were. And a picture and a couple playbills of Cole Porter - but only if you knew who he was. Turns out he wrote several of his biggest musicals at the home but they don't tell you that. Many visitors were complaining upstairs and asking "Is this all there is?" The first floor is exceptional and the architecture is the best of all the mansions. So are the gardens and expansive lawn leading to the ocean. Please Rosecliff, re-open the master bedrooms!

    One of the smaller tours
A bit underwhelming. I know for someone middle class like me to say that about a mansion is funny, but the other mansions we toured were much more opulent and had more things to see inside. The ballroom which hosts weddings is stunning and the guide we spoke to was very nice.

    Beautiful mansion
Rosecliff was one of the 4 mansions owned by the Preservation Society of Newport that was open for touring in October. Like the others, it was a beautiful house. The large ballroom was especially impressive. On the other hand, the house was sparsely furnished with none of the original furniture available. The second floor was basically a museum; it currently displayed a tribute to Chinese ties. I did like the gardens quite well. It was a truly wonderful place to tour but still our least favorite of the four.

Beautiful mansion on a slightly more human scale than The Breakers
A more intimate scale than The Breakers, but just as interesting. Strongly recommend downloading the Newport Mansions Tour app to your phone and taking the free audio tour, added a much greater understanding. And got to see the ballroom where Arnold danced the tango in True Lies!

    A true party house
It was very interesting to see this particular mansion, as it really showed the difference between places where people actually wanted to live for the summer vs places designed solely for entertaining. Every room on the main floor was an entertainment space. Then, upstairs were the modest bedrooms, almost an afterthought. We really enjoyed the fabulous exhibit on the African Americans in Newport and their work for freedom and abolition and how they were successful business people fighting to be acknowledged in the town of ultra-rich. The mansion is well worth a visit and definitely provides a different view of the season in Newport and how people approached it.

We went in December to see the Tiffany exhibit and the house. The tours are self guided only, which I detest because I want to be able to hear a guide who knows the house and its history and can answer questions. The recordings are informative, but lack the personal touch. Also, there were many unexplained artifacts in each room that should have been labeled or had additional recordings that described the furnishings in each room (like a map of the room with arrows that you can point to for further description). The library appeared to have a Tiffany lamp and frame, but no one seemed to know anything at the property - very ill informed staff. The exhibit is wonderful and lots of lamps to view in awe.

The staff estimates that the tour will take 30 mins. but we took 90 since we listened to every story available on the device.
If you have time to listen, it's worthwhile and sometimes humorous. The ballroom is mindblowing and the grounds breathtaking. This is one of my favortie mansions so far of the 7 I have toured.

My husband and I got the duo ticket for the Newport mansions which is admission to The Breakers and a choice of one of the others. Rosecliff was the second we visited. It is a beautiful building but there is almost nothing inside that relates to an experience of life in Newport during the gilded age. There are very few rooms to see and only one of them has been reconstructed in period. The second floor, at this time, is an exhibit on Newport’s connection to the China trade. Interesting but not why I wanted to see the mansions. It appears that Rosecliff is now an event venue. The grounds are nice but nothing compared to The Breakers or especially The Elms which we added as a ticket upgrade after our disappointing visit to Rosecliff.
Lessons learned: 1) take time to download the Newport Mansions app and go through the tours before you decide where to go; 2) if you buy the duo ticket and want to add a third mansion, you can buy an upgraded ticket for $8. Not sure about all the conditions for the upgrade but worked for us after seeing Rosecliff earlier in the day.

This was a return trip of us to one of our favorite mansions in Newport, having visited it in every decade since the 1970s. So we have seen the changes over the years. Sadly, this time, we were disappointed. While this is a lovely structure, the rooms have been emptied out and a staff member explained the items had been sent to auction. The rooms on the main floor you can visit are the entry, salon, ballroom, library, hallway and dining room. Upstairs, only one room could be seen that kept the flavor of the mansion and the rest were being used for a museum exhibit, and all other rooms were closed off, and windows were covered. Staff member said he didn’t know why they didn’t open the two end rooms, like they were in the past. The day we visited was after some sort of event as the tent was still up and in disarray and the grand porch area outside the ballroom had random tables, chairs etc and should have been more presentable for those who paid for admission.
While the mansion is elegant and timeless, there is no sense of the people who summered there anymore. The charm of the gilded age has been diluted in this property. We were glad we stopped at the Mansion at Rough Point which the Newport Preservation Foundation has done a terrific job in presenting and preserving.

I've visited the Elms and Breakers. Rosecliff is my least favorite - it's much smaller than the other two and is used as a wedding location ... so you're paying to visit a wedding event space. Drive in, admire the facade and garden to the right, and move on. Slip into the main entrance if you have a moment, then you can look at the ballroom photos online. The upstairs rooms are now used for wedding planning and prep, and that's it. The sub level is restrooms and gift shop. There is an exhibition about the connection between China and Newport that is interesting, but not about the mansion itself.

Known as the place to party in the Golden Age, Rosecliff was modeled after the Grand Trianon at Versailles, but smaller and reduced to a basic "H" shape. The mansion was also known as the setting for many Golden Age social events, including a party featuring famed magician Harry Houdini. Although the interior is not as elaborate as The Breakers, Marble House or The Elms, it is worth seeing. Additionally, the movies The Great Gatsby and True Lies have filmed scenes here. The Rosecliff's back lawn overlooks the Newport Cliff Walk and the Atlantic Ocean, a nice spot for taking pictures.
