Brentwood School fosters opportunities for students to become lifelong learners, responsible citizens, and to develop positive self-esteem.

Brentwood School is part of a much larger learning community that is the Calgary Board of Education. Programs in the CBE are designed to enrich lives and promote quality learning by recognizing the many diverse ways of learning and the many interests and abilities that our students have today.

We believe:

  • Students come first
  • Learning is our central purpose
  • Public education serves a common good

We are the designated school for the Traditional Learning Centre Program (TLC) – Grades K to 6.

Our school is located in the established northwest community of Brentwood, just a few kilometers from the downtown core of the city. The School is the proud home of the "Traditional Learning Centre". This alternative program follows the Alberta Program of Studies and has a focus on direct instruction, critical thinking, and character education. The program utilizes core resources that are common to all TLC programs in the CBE. French as a Second Language is provided through a locally developed curriculum, in Grades 1 to 3.

Beginning in Grade 4 students follow the Alberta Program of Studies, French as a Second Language curriculum. We have a strong music program with a music specialist teaches, beginning in Kindergarten. Students attending our Traditional Learning Centre program come from the CBE's Area 1. Our Traditional Learning Centre program currently serves students in Kindergarten to Grade 6. Grade 7 students transition to Thomas B. Riley School.

School Mission

The Traditional Learning program uses teacher-directed instruction and character education to foster reflective thinking, continuous learning and responsible citizenship. It is a celebration of cultural diversity and commonly held values. The virtues-oriented school environment prepares students to meet the moral, technological and global challenges of the 21st century. Guiding principles: Instruction is direct, sequential and enriched, built on the concept of a classical liberal arts education. Character education is intentionally taught in every class.

A positive school climate and behaviour policy centred on expected character values. There is a focus on virtues, positive values and respect for self, others and the environment. Development of moral intelligence is the expected outcome. Diversity is celebrated and common values are articulated in a virtues oriented environment that encourages responsible citizenship and collaboration.

School Motto

The school motto "Today's Learning . . . Tomorrow's Success" signifies the importance of learning as a lifelong activity that prepares children for active citizenship throughout their lives.

Our School's Commitment to Truth and Reconciliation

We are committed to acknowledging and supporting the implementation of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission 94 Calls to Action specific to education. Our school, along with all CBE schools, made a Truth and Reconciliation Commitment to Action. On June 21, we renewed our commitment, which can be found under Resources.

Acknowledging the Land

We would like to acknowledge the traditional territories and oral practices of the Blackfoot Nations, which includes the Siksika, the Piikani and the Kainai. We also acknowledge the Tsuut’ina and Stoney Nakoda First Nations, the Métis Nation, and all people who make their homes in the Treaty 7 region of Southern Alberta.

School Development Plan

Each year, our school prepares a development plan with input from teachers, school staff, students and parents. We review many sources of data, including report cards, provincial achievement test results and school surveys. Based on this information, we create our plan identifying targeted areas for growth. Our school development plan is not meant to represent all of the work that takes place in our school, but rather it focuses on specific areas for improvement.

School Improvement Results Report

Our school also prepares a results plan, which looks at our previous school year. It shows our students’ achievement and progress in meeting the goals and outcomes as set out by the CBE and Alberta Education, outlines some of the highlights of our school development plan and gives an overview of our school. You can look on the CBE website for system-wide results.
