We enjoy walking college campuses for the architecture and public art. We arrived on the Vassar College campus on a beautiful September afternoon. Since the campus is usually pretty spread out, it's best to do some research to identify buildings you want to see. On the Vassar campus, there are several traditional buildings worth seeing: 1865 Main Building; 1904 Vassar Chapel; 1913 All Campus Dining Center; 1951 Ferry House; 1958 Noyes House; and 1959 Chicago Hall. Among others with unique architectural characteristics. Fun time!

We walked around Vassar College, one of the historic Seven Sisters colleges, and enjoyed it so much!

The buildings and nature are so beautiful. A must-visit on campus is the  Frances Lehman Loeb Art Center with new and historical art from artists all around the world.

What a beautiful college this is. The buildings are stunning and an architectural delight. The entrances are especially interesting, as well as the library. A definite must if nearby. A great place to take a walk and sit on a bench under the lovely trees.

Maybe I am biased as I went to college at Vassar. I love to stop by when I am in the area. With COVID, the campus is very quiet. I just love the beautiful architecture of the buildings, the intimate setting (everything is so walkable) and the beautiful Sunset Lake - such a great place to enjoy fall foliage!

A self guided tour of the Vassar campus turned out to be a marvelous experience. Beautiful, stately academic buildings and dorms coupled with gorgeous gothic revival chapels, the school has a classic, historic feel.

The campus is relatively small serving a student population just under 2500. We found the few students encountered onsite during the winter break to be pleasant and helpful.

An interesting way to spend an hour, two or three if you find yourself with a little time while in Poughkeepsie.

Toured the Vassar College Campus which included the Frances Lehman Loeb Art Center, the Chapel, and the Thompson Memorial Library. The massive stained-glass window that dominates the library’s interior space depicts Elena Lucrezia Cornaro Piscopia, the first woman to receive a doctorate in 1678 from the University of Padua in Italy. Elena studied Latin and Greek under distinguished instructors and became proficient in these languages, as well as French and Spanish by the age of 7. She also mastered Hebrew and Arabic, earning the title of Oraculum Septilingue ("Seven-language Oracle"). She later studies included mathematics, philosophy, and theology. She also became an expert musician, mastering the harpsichord, the clavichord, the harp, and the violin. She attended the University of Padua.
Graduates of Vassar included United States Navy Rear Admiral Grace M. Hopper, class of 1928, inventor of the first compiler for a computer programming language; Chemist, first woman to graduate from MIT, Ellen Henrietta Swallow,1870; Academy Award-winning actress, Meryl Streep, class of 1971.

We strolled a morning here. Classes had been in session for about a week, so all the students looked chipper and eager for higher education. Lots of smiles and hellos.

Their library (the main photo above) impresses. We chatted with the staff, even plopped down in the chairs and read their publication, VQ. Students were checking volumes (there are over 1,000,000 neatly shelved books here) out at the desk.

Pull through the main gate--there is free, easy parking on the center lane leading to the original 1861 building. The bookstore is a block away, just off campus. One can see what the seniors are reading for their English Lit classes. So collegiate.
