Living in the real heart of the city, you have the chance to witness the daily life of Chinese people. Living in the courtyard house with over 500 year's history, you are closer to those ancient Chinese stories. Our hotel is suitable for culture explorers & mind-peace seeker.
I can't think of a single complaint - the comfort and quietness of the room, the convenience of the location, the cost/value relationship of the room ... all of it was great. As a bonus, you may find the staff is the best you've experienced anywhere. I've traveled to over 25 countries and they are as good as any place I've ever stayed. They sincerely care that you are happy and your stay in Beijing delightful. Their English is good and they can give good advice about the area. Some other things: HOTEL AND AREA: If you are used to a pristine location, the arrival on the hutong (alley) may cause an initial moment of concern but quickly you learn to appreciate it's charm. The hotel is an old and interesting building. It has multiple intimate courtyards, a small bar and a…

Reservations and email correspondence were fast and efficient. The hotel provided instructions in Chinese to give the taxi driver and the metered taxi cost 92RMB from Beijing airport. The hotel is about 400 meters east down the 3rd hutong off of busy Dongsi Street. It is clearly marked so you can't miss it. Check in was seamless and all the front desk staff speak relatively good English. We were taken to our room which is a larger "wedding" room that could sleep 3 people. The hotel has so much character and even though there may be some paint peeling or wood chipping, it is very clean. There are in room amenities that you would find in western hotels such as toiletries, coffee maker, mini bar, safe, TV, computer and wifi. The bed was extremely comfortable the room is so quiet…

I absolutely love this place, quiet and beautiful through out with traditional decor and style. Saying the front desk giving us exceptional service would be an understatement! They went above and beyond for us. This trip very memorable experience us. We are glad we chose double happiness, will visit again soon!

Loved this place - was travelling on my own, but would definitely take family & friends back to this warm, inviting, traditionally Chinese inspired hotel. It is nestled away in a darkened, narrow lane way, so try to arrive during day light hours; walking alone down an unknown, lone alley trying to find this place in the middle of the night was a little disconcerting. I did happen to meet a few young locals along the way and they read the address I had & pointed me in the right direction - a safe area, but if you do arrive in the night by taxi have the driver take you all the way to the front door. The bedrooms are delightful, comfortable and exactly what I needed at the end of my travels (Wi-Fi included). The price is mid range, the breakfast was Asian styled & plentiful, and…

Stayed four nights in this hotel. As a Chinese myself I can understand why expats who are interested in Chinese culture would rate this hotel so high. However, using traditional Chinese furniture and decoration means forgoing a couch where you can relax and watch TV, a king size bed, bath tub, tap with strong water pressure..... So it becomes a matter of personal preference. If you are Chinese like me, I bet you will prefer elsewhere. Rooms are comparatively small here. Having said so, the staff here is excellent, working hard to add a personal touch to the guests. A special token of appreciation for the housekeeping ladies who are not only diligent but more importantly, honest. The watch we left in the room remained where it was after a whole day out.

The Double Happiness is located down a tiny alley in the Beijing Hutongs area and believe me, on your first journey down there you will be wondering what on earth you have done. We were taken there by taxi after being picked up from a more corporate high rise hotel and our taxi driver's puzzled face probably spoke for all of us. But the DH is an amazing little place. First of all, it's located in a part of Beijing we may never have visited. Secondly, the reception staff are amazing. Their English is great and nothing is too much trouble. It is five star service. Thirdly the rooms. Simply beautiful. Every little detail has been considered down to the matching light switches. The rooms are spotless and every toiletry is provided should you need it. We loved the beds…

We chose the Wedding suite. There four of us: 2 adults 2 kids (8 and 9). Breakfast: big choice of local things. Great fun trying them. A good selection of western too. Room: quite spacious, even with four. Location: quaint street. Lots of locals for a cultural feel. Easy walk to main streets and tube. Beds: super comfy. Cleanliness: top quality. Bathroom: clean and very generous with toiletries. Even toothbrushes and combs. Culture: feels very authentic. Courtyard, hallways very well decorated. Noise: minimal. Street had workers during the day, but not a problem. A little dusty on the street. Please click if you find this post useful. Thanks.

We traveled Asia for a full month with our two daughters and stayed in many comfortable guest houses and hotels, but the three nights we spent at Double Happiness were the best. We so appreciated the combination of traditional decor and hutong living alongside the gracious service, modern conveniences (like electric kettles in the rooms), and helpful hosts with perfect English. Our room was so pretty -- we were enchanted -- plus warm and comfortable, and the breakfasts were over-the-top out-of-this-world wonderful. Later, after long cold winter days spent exploring Beijing, we were always so happy to come 'home' to Double Happiness! Highly recommended!

Stayed here for a 2 day business trip after Chinese New year due to the good Tripadvisor reviews. I like the authenticity of the living experience and the attentive service from the staff. Also, the in-house kitchen makes good ala carte food ( i told the chef to use less oil) However, from a practical viewpoint on a business trip, location is a 15 min walk to the subway station. And it was relatively difficult to find for the first time late at night. I would come back for a longer trip in Beijing but not for a quick trip.

I am so sorry to take so long to respond. We took a taxi to the hotel. You should have printed out an extra "coupon" that you give the taxi driver so he can get 10 extra RMB when he delivers you to the door. Make sure you get into the taxi BEFORE you give him the yellow paper with the address on it. Many taxi drivers will decline to take you into the hutong. It is a fabulous place to stay. Also another thing about paying. If you can take a picture of the 100 RMB notes just before you give it to the driver. The reason for this is some dishonest taxi drivers/shopkeepers might try to tell you that the bill/note you gave them is counterfeit. The taxi stand is straight outside. All taxis charge the same thing and it was worth taking taxis almost everywhere. Hope your trip is/was fantastic!
The hotel sends you instructions to provide to the taxi drivers and they find it with it.
The hotel organized excursions for us and they can come to pick you up in the hotel for the wall, the Chinese opera, etc. The staff was very friendly helping with that .
"Situated along a narrow alley, might be a little inconvenient for wheelchair users and baby strollers if taxis or hail rider cars are not willing to drive in."
