Action! - Female 4 Front: Shea's Poison to Stripped Down The Rage of Teens
Shea shifts gears completely, leaving the B-level steamy and sleazy stuff behind in favor of something more wholesome in this story about a teenage girl battling with age-related but personal issues that lead to bulimia, and her mother's attempt to help her and cope with other problems at work as a psychologist.
Despite the film's similarities to his TV episodes about teenagers like "The Secret Life of an American Teenager," the film is elevated by Shea's direction and the great performances of a tiny Alison Lohman (Drag Me to Hell) and Mae Winningham, whose screen chemistry (or lack thereof as mother and daughter) keeps you hooked…
IT'S NOT ABOUT YOU!!!... IT'S NOT ABOUT YOU IT'S NOT ABOUT YOU... IT'S ABOUT ME, OKAY??!!! CAN ANYTHING BE ABOUT ME?
It’s all about Alison Lohman’s absolute all-time show-stopping screaming breakdown beyond the midpoint. What comes before is an artful lead-up to this moment, with close-ups of food and tiny hints at what’s going on that no doubt deepen its impact on a rewatch. If there is a downside, it’s in the dialogue which sometimes feels forced or artificial in that “this character’s entering a room, so she better say something” sort of way. What comes after is somber and sobering, and no less thoughtful, but seems like more of an extended epilogue. A little bit uneven, but I’d warm to it more seeing it again.
Don’t ask me why I saw this on YouTube and decided to watch it again for the first time in years, let’s pretend it wasn’t just me basically triggering myself :)
Had to watch this masterpiece again. The scene where she talks about how she doesn’t do it because of her looks, I’ve never had a movie scene hit me that hard in relation to me. It still deserves five stars.
