A royal wedding took place this weekend! Prince Ludwig of Bavaria, the great-grandson of the last King of Bavaria, King Ludwig III, married Oxford PhD student Sophie-Alexandra Evekink. (Though German monarchies were abolished in 1918, members of Germanic royal families still use titles.)

Prince Ludwig and Sophie-Alexandra got engaged in summer 2022. At the time, Prince Luitpold, Ludwig's father, told the German publication Bild, "Ludwig made a good choice. My future daughter-in-law is a very intelligent and educated woman."

The two tied the knot on May 20 at Theatinerkirche (Theatine Church) in Munich, then had a reception at Nymphenburg Palace hosted by Ludwig's cousin Franz, Duke of Bavaria. "Princess Sophie and Prince Ludwig of Bavaria would like to express their gratitude to everyone who made their wedding an unforgettable event," the Haus Bayern shared on social media after the wedding. "The couple would like to extend a special thank you to all the attendees and guests, as well as the representatives of the delegations of Bavarian traditional associations, with whom the family has a longstanding connection. Furthermore, the couple would like to express their sincere appreciation to all the staff, participants involved in the preparation, during, and after the wedding, as well as all the local service personnel whose dedication and support made the wedding possible in its current form."

Prince Ludwig is expected to become head of his family; his father, Prince Luitpold of Bavaria, is a first cousin of the ruling Franz, Duke of Bavaria. Franz never had children, so his brother, Prince Max, will succeed him; but Max only has daughters, so per male-preference primogeniture, the title will pass to Prince Luitpold and then Prince Ludwig.
