Mahavatar Babaji was one of the greatest and most powerful Shivaganas. He was given a place equivalent to that of Lord Shiva at one time because of which he was asked to teach and spread divine knowledge to all in the earth. So, he took birth as Babaji. He is a chiranjeevi.

Mahavatar Babaji is a great and powerful Master who has been guiding sincere souls for more than 2000 years.

Babaji’s parents were Namboodiris from Kerala. His parents moved to Cuddalore in Tamil Nadu where he was born and raised. His birth name was Nagaraj. Due to his parents’ death, he was left alone. He was forcibly taken to North India by a traveller. He endured a lot of hardships. He wandered for a while in the Himalayas and developed interest in spirituality. He returned to his hometown on the advice of a few Aghoris and other Masters he met. On the way back, he saw Bhoganathar and his disciples returning from China. When Bhoganathar spotted this 14–15 year old lad, he offered to take him as his disciple.Thus, Babaji came under the powerful guidance of Bhoganathar and soon became one of his prime disciples. With the completion of the first phase of training, Bhoganathar directed him to go to Agasthya Maharishi.

Some say that he is Lord Shiva Himself. He does not appear as depicted in many pictures. His orb is mostly of golden colour and sometimes opaque blue. Mahavatar Babaji has guided many Masters. Sri Totapuri, Sri Ramakrishna Paramahamsa’s Guru, was also guided by Babaji. If someone joins his fold, he will watch over them from birth to birth until they reach enlightenment.

The young Babaji then moved towards the Western Ghats and learnt difficult yogic practices and kriyas under Agasthya Maharishi. Only those who have tremendous willpower can sustain such an intense training of Agasthya Maharishi. Babaji could successfully touch the highest peaks of what Agasthya Maharishi had taught and became immortal (chiranjeevi). Babaji can disintegrate and integrate his body at will. So, he takes a physical body only when there is a need. Even now, he visits Sathuragiri in Tamil Nadu and stays in the place where he took his lessons from Agasthya Maharishi.

Mahavatar Babaji has a sister. Although she is not his actual sister, he still regards her as such. She is also a powerful yogi. She accompanies him wherever he goes. So, whenever he calls, she also becomes a light body and joins him. She is a Guiding Light to so many sadhus in Meru mountain. She also heals sadhus and serious sadhaks in Omkar mountain in Tibet.
