Things we know about Greenberg:

So, Today I was thinking about my favorite characters in TW, and the obvious answer for me of who was my favorite character in the show lead me directly to coach Finstock, which in succession lead me to my second favorite character in the show (or at least my other favorite character since I like the coach and Greenberg practically the same), the infamous and mysterious Greenberg! after thinking for a little bit about my favorite characters, I ended up realizing how little yet much we, as an audience, know or at least can assume about Greenberg, even though he is never clearly shown in the show, so without further introduction, let's check the data:

  1. The most obvious one, Greenberg is a boy. I think that it would have been fun if Greenberg was, in fact, a girl and the only female player in the lacrosse team during early seasons, however, we know this is not true due to Greenberg being referred as a "he" in the show, and due to his presence in the male lockers of the lacrosse team, and because Kira was, apparently, the first female player in the team, at least that we know of and that was shown. Now, some people might argue that since we never actually see Greenberg then there's a possibility that Greenberg is a "girl" but just likes to be referred as a "he" because of reasons, however, due to the time the show aired, mainly the first few seasons, that's unlikely since by then the whole pronoun thing for trans people wasn't so public and in the known at the time, hence, Greenberg is most likely a boy.

  2. Greenberg is not the smartest monkey in the jungle... As far as we know of Greenberg's abilities, he's responsible enough to do the readings, at least for coach's class, but... he might not the smartest guy in the school, I say this because Greenberg was held back, more than once, at least according to coach. Now, we could argue that Greenberg got held back on purpose just to spend more time with his favorite teacher/coach, but that seems unlikely, though not impossible, however, other than that, at least that I can remember, there's not much regarding Greenberg's intelligence, however, there might be something regarding his physical capacity.

  3. Greenberg sucks... in season 1 we see coach yelling to Greenberg for him to "take a lap" and then to go "Faster Greenberg!!!", then, in season 2, if I remember correctly, the coach tells Stiles that Greenberg "sucks" but that Stiles sucks "slightly less", if we think about this then we could consider that Greenberg is not good at lacrosse, and probably not even that athletic, still, he is in the team, and during season 1, when the pink eye epidemic "thank you, Greenberg" hit the team, they needed provisionary players on the first line, the ones named were Rodriguez, Taylor, and Bilinski, though in no moment Greenberg was mentioned as a provisionary player, this is because he's already on the first line, how can he be in the first line if he's worse than Stiles? no idea, but he was, season 2 show this to us in the same exchange I mentioned before were coach tells Stiles that he's better than Greenberg, due to Stiles reaction and the interaction they had, it seemed that Greenberg was, in fact, a player in the first line, even though he wasn't even that good.

  4. He and coach have a love-hate relationship... kind of? I know it sounds weird, but we all know how much coach seems to dislike Greenberg even though the boy seems to really like his coach/teacher, to the point he was the only one actually giving the coach a gift for his birthday, which he did despite the coach always making blatantly obvious that he doesn't like Greenberg. I personally don't think the coach hates Greenberg as much as he says, just because the coach is not really the type to hate on someone for absolutely no good reason, and sure, the coach might be mocking and harsh a lot of the times with the boys and people in general, he might not be the best with words and things, and he might have quite the bad temper in general, but he has shown to care about his players or at least the main boys, and he did defend Liam against bullies, he saved Jackson and Ethan, he even saved Meredith and the others once, and the only person we see coach actually hating was one guy from eichen who was, apparently, the coach's bully in the past, other than that, and his inability to understand some of the most common aspects regarding human interaction and common sense, he doesn't seem the kind of person who just hates without a good reason, not to mention, if he actually hated Greenberg, then he wouldn't even let him be on the team since according to coach, he's worse than Stiles.

  5. Greenberg had a pink eye and somehow passed it to other team players.

  6. Greenberg knows the coach's phone number and, potentially, calls regularly... I say this because of the scene in season 2 in which coach tells the players that in case they got any information on Isaac, they had to call him, "except for you Greenberg, don't call me Friday night. I'm not kidding, don't call me, you shouldn't even have my number", by his tone and his words, it's pretty obvious that Greenberg does have coach's numbers and calls him "Friday night", probably in a regular basis just often enough to make the coach seem tired and done with the calls.

  7. Greenberg is older than Scott and Stiles, which is why he didn't "appear" more after season 4 (at least that I can remember), remember that in season 4 the coach said that Greenberg was held back again, which I had already mentioned before, indicating that he has been held back at least twice, by the beginning of the show Scott and Stiles were 16, I think, so Greenberg at the very least must have been 17 or 18 at the time... WOW!

  8. Greenberg, most likely, went stag to the dance in season 1, and he was looking at the coach for reasons we don't know of, but many can imagine.

  9. Greenberg is actually lanky, and probably not tall, quite average... in season 1 there are 2 scenes were we potentially see Greenberg, though not clearly... one of these is in the scene in which coach tells "Greenberg! take a lap, let's go. Faster, Greenberg!" and he was talking to a short (or at least shorter than coach) boy to run, we see the player following coach's instructions, and he looks rather thin in comparison with other players on the team, another scene is in the classroom where the coach asks about the reading and then "Greenberg, put your hand down, everybody knows you did the reading", in that scene 3 people raised their hands, as far as I can remember, it was 1 girl and 3 boys, and although we can't see some of their faces clearly, or even have a good sight at their physique, in general, they do seem to be quite average in looks, not as muscular and hot like some of the boys in the lacrosse team.

If you have or know any other things about Greenberg, please leave a comment and let us know, and let us appreciate the beauty of this enigmatic character. thank's for your time, enjoy your next 24 hours.

"though in no moment Greenberg was mentioned as a provisionary player,"

he couldn't be named as a PP cause he was out with pink eye.

"seems to dislike Greenberg even though the boy seems to really like his coach/teacher, to the point he was the only one actually giving the coach a gift for his birthday, which he did despite the coach always making blatantly obvious that he doesn't like Greenberg"

as for this and how he has Coach's number I have a theory. i think Greenberg is the son of someone the Coach briefly dated and it didn't end well. might have even been years before which is why Coach seems dismayed to have the kid around. who wants to be constantly reminded of a relationship that blew up a few years back

Good point in the first one, it went over my head, I don't know how when it was that obvious XD hahahaha.

I do have a similar theory or "headcanon" (is that the right expression/term?), I think Greenberg was the son of someone Coach dated, but I don't think he has a problem with his ex per se, I think it might be more of a problem with "Greenberg", the potential father of our Greenberg... my headcanon is that coach dated a woman he really liked, he was being absolutely serious about his relationship with her, but then a guy who the coach might or might not have known at the time and potentially either not like or who was a friend of him, Greenberg, appeared and seduced coach's girlfriend and made her leave coach to be with him instead, this left coach obviously heartbroken and angry (which also might explain why he's so angry and moody so often, and why he used to have drinking problems) and hating "Greenberg", the last name of the man who took away the woman coach loved, making this also the reason why coach seems to dislike our Greenberg so much, because he has the same last name and is, supposedly, the son of the man who "ruined" his life and happiness.

Also, as an extension to the "headcanon", I like to think that Greenberg is, in fact, the coach's son that he doesn't know about... hear me out, so in my headcanon, the coach was with a woman he really liked, but she left him for "Greenberg", the reason coach hates that last name, and months later she gives birth to the Greenberg we know and love, but, due to the dates in which she met Greenberg, left coach, and then dated Greenberg, the child could be either from the coach or from Greenberg, at first they just live as if our Greenberg was the other Greenberg's son, but years later, Greenberg's mom, or his "dad", reveals to the kid that he's actually the son of coach Finstock, at first Greenberg doesn't know what to do with that information, but later, he decides that he wants to meet his "real"/biological father, that's how he ends up in BHHS, and meeting coach Finstock, then something happens, and despite coach's angry attitude, he helps Greenberg somehow, and from that point on Greenberg decides that he wants to form a bond of sorts with coach and get to know him, his father, resulting in their awkward but hilarious relationship in which Greenberg tries to do anything to get coach's attention and form some sort of father-son bond, while coach is just confused, irritated, and angry that the "son" of Greenberg, his sworn enemy, his so attached to him and always tries to do things together... by the way, coach wouldn't know that Greenberg is actually is son and not "Greenberg's son", it would be like a secret that Greenberg is keeping while trying to get closer to coach.

Anyway, that's just a crazy headcanon I made for fun.

Or here’s a really weird headcanon. Coach is nutty as a fruit cake and Greenberg is just in his head. No one tells him the truth cause it’s basically harmless and they feel bad because Coach is clearly really lonely

"Coach is nutty as a fruit cake and Greenberg is just in his head" I'm sorry, but could you elaborate or explain this? I'm not an English native speaker, so I don't understand what that "expression" or sentence is supposed to mean, please, I want to know :'c Edit: oh, doesn't matter, now I know what it means.

I agree, he’s just a figment of coaches imagination.

he is a real character how could a pink eye epidemic be cause by a guy who does not exist and many lines if dialogue prove he is a real person

Easy. Coach started that epidemic.

And he bought himself that mug. He doesn’t remember cause he’s nuts, blackouts or whatever. Or maybe someone else bought the mug and just wrote it’s was from Greenberg.
