Q&A
What makes this unique for its time period is its depiction of a friendship between a white man (John Cassavetes) and a black man (Sidney Poitier), which was praised by the NAACP when first released in 1957. Unfortunately, and unsurprisingly, this also made movie theaters in the south refuse to screen the movie and was actually a flop as a result. It's not one many talk about, even among classic film fans, so I think this is an unknown and unique gem.
*spoiler
One of the worst deaths on film. Heartbreaking, but great movie.
