‘Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile’ Review: "You have never seen Zac Efron like this"

r/movies - ‘Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile’ Review: "You have never seen Zac Efron like this"

The plot of Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile is adapted from the memoir The Phantom Prince: My Life with Ted Bundy by Bundy’s former longtime girlfriend, Elizabeth Kloepfer (Lily Collins). The film begins with her first encounter of the serial killer at a bar and follows her over a span of six years until Kloepfer’s last meeting with Bundy before his execution. It is through her eyes that an audience can even fathom how someone could love a man like Ted Bundy, and how hard it can be to break free from his grasp. Audiences familiar with Zac Efron from teen romance and comedy roles, such as High School Musical, Hair Spray, and Neighbors, will be shocked by this complete role reversal.

I really like this story, and I genuinely think that Effron's a really good actor.

I think in an alternate universe, him and Brad Pitt have similar careers. After Brad Pitt become a sex symbol from Thelma and Louise, he could have done all these schmaltzy romance and bubble gum movies like Effron did. Instead he went toward movies like Kalifornia, True Romance, and 12 Monkeys where he intentionally made himself look unpretty and weird. And in so doing established himself as an actual actor, not merely a pretty guy.

Effron is a legitimate actor. You've seen glimpses of it in a few of his bubble gum movies.

I have high expectations for this. I like him.

I thought he was great in Neighbors 2. Yes, it's a comedy, but I think he played the slapstick role of good looking idiot frat-bro with quite a bit of nuance. It made me realize that I actually really like him - and was one of the main reasons I gave Mike & Dave Need Wedding Dates a shot (also big Adam DeVine fan), which I thought was OK for what it was, but he (and DeVine) were still stupid entertaining and likable in it.

To me Brad Pitt has the edge because of his confidence, he can underplay a role beautifully and still make you think he’s the coolest guy in the room. Efrons thing so far has been unending enthusiasm and effort thrown at the screen, which is fun, but not as good as Pitt

That's also the roles he's (or his agent has) chosen.

He can play understated I think

I really liked him in The Greatest Showman. He has really good choreography skills - "The Other Side" wasn't one of the popular songs, but the scene itself is a ton of fun to watch, he and Jackman have great performance chemistry.

Whoever had the idea of casting a teenage hearttrob as a serial killer known for luring people with his charisma and good looks should get a raise.

I found it weird that they put so much emphasis on Liz feeling guilty for calling him in based on the picture in the paper...when in truth she found more of his stuff including the cast making materials...which seems pretty damning to me.

He had her very convinced during the first trial that it was all coincidence. Once you're that deep, you really try to rationalize away further evidence despite how damning.

Which was the point of the movie. It was through her point of view.

Of course we know how just how fucking evil he was now. We have 40 more years of evidence. Back then, he had a very big cult following due to his charisma. That's what the movie was about. How people could have fallen for his charm, told from the view of a woman that did fall for his charm.

This person should write another article detailing what we all actually want to hear about, which is James Hetfields Oscar worthy performance.
