This is an AMAZING school! Our daughter, from a small town in Alaska, applied to a bunch of schools during COVID and Kimball Union (KUA) had the most approachable and supportive information and interview experience. We were all nervous to send her 4,000 miles away to a small town in New Hampshire but wow we have been so happy and impressed. She is finishing her third year and each year she grows, receives more support, and thrives. The School is great on reporting and communications and they have a TON of resources for students to learn and grow. High school can be hard but the students are extremely supportive of one another. The culture set by administration, staff, teachers, facilities, coaches- it is all positive yet rigorous. A perfect balance for learning and growth. The school academics and sports are getting better each year and they are a small but mighty place to be. When you are touring New England schools take the time to head north to Meriden and check out KU.
As a parent of a '26 student/athlete at KUA, we have seen such growth and development in our son since he began as a boarder in the fall of 22. He has become more confident, self-reliant and mature and has found amazing friends and faculty to support him. Academics have been appropriately challenging with a level of peer tutor and faculty support that has allowed him to excel. His experience in athletics has been challenging, exciting and most important, very enjoyable for him. He feels supported in his athletic endeavors by teammates, coaches and the KUA community. Parent engagement is what you make of it, if you want to be engaged with the KUA community as a parent there are plenty of opportunities to do so both in person and virtually. Whenever there is a concern, the school encourages my son to work through it with staff, but if that is not possible, engages with us to develop solutions. Overall, a great experience so far!
I remember the nervousness of walking onto campus for the first time with my son. He’s stepping away from home and wondering how he would fit in. Well, looking back it was the best experience ever. We were welcomed with open arms. Teachers, coaches and staff were all there to help your child succeed. I had to remember that as I drove away. And as I look back now and chuckle, I cannot remember a time where a child WANTED to get back to school after a vacation. That’s how much of an impact that the teachers, coaches and friends made with him.
There is a ton of history at KUA since they were established in 1813. Two dorms are now being expanded and looking great. The campus, especially in the fall in New England, is beautiful!
KUA’s sports teams are competitive, especially the boys hockey team which is one of the best in New England.
If your child is serious about attending a prep school, I would encourage anyone to take a visit to New Hampshire and meet the faculty at KUA.
